Texas Man gives change to homeless person, is handcuffed and held by police for an hour

Greg Snider was in a Houston, Texas parking lot, on the phone making a business call. While in the lot, a homeless man approached his car and asked for change. Snider gave him 75 cents and then drove off.

When Snider pulled onto a nearby freeway, a police car pulled him to the side. Greg was surprised by how aggressive the officer was, telling KPRC,

“He's screaming. He's yelling. He's telling me to get out of the car. He's telling me to put my hands on the hood…They're like, 'We saw you downtown. We saw what you did.’ And I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I gave a homeless man 75 cents.'"

He was dragged out of his car and handcuffed. So what was it that police insisted Mr. Snider had done? Give that homeless man drugs.

Snider agreed to let police search his cars for drugs, and they did so for an hour while Greg remained handcuffed. In that time, ten more police cars showed up and pulled over. The search was not fruitful – no drugs were found in the car.

Aside from the damage police did to his car, Snider isn’t happy that the police were actually laughing about the mistake.

Mr. Snider has filed a complaint. Police declined to comment to KPRC about the incident.

I definitely feel the pendulum has swung in the favor of authorities since 9/11 and if this stupid kind of stuff continues it will definitely swing back.

When someone gives a homeless man something and you can't see it, are the odds higher that it is change or that it is drugs? I believe the odds are higher that it is change. Its probably 99.999 to 0.001 that its just change. I don't see any logic in the cops head.

Why would someone "give" a homeless person drugs? Don't dealers typically want to sell their products, preferably to people with a continuing ability to pay? Seems like a ludicrous presumption to assert that he was giving a valuable commodity away for free to someone with no chance of repeat business.

The cops are just trying to crack down on the brilliant marketing solution of giving your product away to people who can't afford it in a clever scheme to get them hooked and be unable to pay you for more product they now desperately crave.

Letting them search his car was a mistake. Looks like they damaged it, and they could have easily planted drugs there.

Well the good news is he was in Houston and not New Mexico where he would have been repeatedly anal probed.

What did he think was going to happen when he consented to the search? Did he really expect the obnoxious asshole who accused him of dealing drugs to treat his property with care and respect?

Now his only recourse is filing a complaint, which will be "investigated" by other cops and dismissed. Don't forfeit your rights by consenting to searches!

Really?? How often do you visit Houston?

This is one of the first times I've heard of this occurring and it not being a legitimate drug bust.

Ok you live about 30 miles outside of Houston for crying out loud.

I lived in Houston itself, downtown area almost all my life up until I moved. Yes, I do know what the hell I am talking about son.

All you have to do is google words like Harris County Deputy arrested, Harris County Sheriff suspended, Houston PD suspension, Houston PD FBI investigation, you will come up with a shit ton of hits off these corrupt assholes.

Funny I googled each one of your terms and didn't come up with your guaranteed shit ton of hits.

There was that Kmart raid about 10 years ago. Street racers were allegedly using a Kmart parking lot to organize races, so Houston police raided the property and indiscriminately arrested hundreds of innocent people, including Kmart shoppers and people eating at Sonic. It was a huge scandal that led to firings and lawsuits.

I have no idea whether that's representative of Houston PD in general, though. Since they did discipline the officers I'm guessing it's not, though as with any large unionized police force I'm sure Houston has plenty of terrible officers.

No hits for stops cited in the OP or citations for falsified arrests. There are arrests of officers for DWI, sexual predation/assault, involvement with drugs, sex with inmates/supplying drugs to inmates. With the exception of the dealing with inmates, these things are no different than some of the population of the US get caught doing. Damn I guess the Police and Sheriffs are human.
