Texas Man arrested for warning drivers of speed trap

I hope he gets a nice settlement out of this. Speed traps are a waste of police resources IMO.

I just had a weird thought though. If it's exercising free speech to hold up a sign to warn drivers of speed traps, would that also protect people who did the same thing in front of sobriety checkpoints?

I don't know about in Louisiana but here they actually publish the dates and locations of DUI checkpoints days in advance. And yet people still get caught...

Surely this is covered by the right to free speech?.

I am sure it is although there may be a legitimate law on the books that wouldn't allow him to do it from the center median. You would think the guy would be smart enough to do it from the side of the road.

Wonder if that had anything to do with it. Usually not legal, or smart, to stand in the middle of a highway.

I don't know the spot they are talking about, but you have to understand that we have a lot of room here in Texas, so many of the freeways here have large medians that are 30-50 feet wide and are covered with grass and trees. I doubt he was in any danger from or to traffic.

If it was a "roadway" and it is illegal then the cops should be out arresting the firemen each time they do a "fill the boot" event...

Or all those high school cheerleaders who want you to go through the car wash for fundraising.

It could be argued that it's an attractive nuisance. I don't buy it, but that charge should stick if taken to court.

People need to start calling these fuckers on their bullshit, like Boomhower above. We all know tickets have nothing to do with safety, but everyone nods and smiles, and treats it as fact, all the while knowing better. Whenever safety gets brought up, it should be corrected to revenue generation. That applies everywhere. Media reporters need to do their jobs, and educate people. Not act as the propaganda wing for the government.

Edit:
corrected name, and isn't to specifically call out boomhower. He's just used as an example.

So Texas or this locality has an actual law preventing people from holding signs on the roadway?

Dunno if they have an "attractive nuisance" law, but that's one of those wonderfully vague laws that can be almost anything you want. "Your Honor. The defendant was in the median with a sign, and being a distraction to drivers. He could have very well cause an accident by taking people's eyes off the road". Unless the judge hates cops(there's a few of them), they'll likely defer to the cop.

Shit like this flat out proves cops are only used to generate income for the city.
If they were really concerned about public safety why wouldnt they want people slowing down?
