Testing video card stability

download 3dmark 2001,2003,2005 or 2006 depending on the model of the video card.

download this RTHDRIBL
http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/

run both(not at same time of course). 3DMark on loop 5 times and RTHDRIBL fro 1 hour. At the end if everything checks out with no visible artifacts/crashes, the card si fine.

He's nailed it on the spot.

You can use ATI tool but sometimes I find it doesn't react well to my 7900GT's vmodded. It says theres all kinds of artifacts but in a real game there is none.

I like the second test in 3dmark05 (the firefly thing). But the best thing to do is just loop 3dmark and VISUALLY LOOK FOR ERRORS. Trust me you'll see them if your card is unstable. Also Quake4/Doom3 is a very sensitive engine to OCing (Oblivion also) so it might be worth a shot to go check those out.

Play some demanding video games.

If it is a high end card, see how it does on Oblivion . . . or even FEAR

My old 9800 Pro can run RTHDRIBL and Atitool artifact finder for 1 hour with no errors but yet it will artifact in CS: S within minutes.

HL2/Source will be unreliable. I can sometime go 4 hours and on artifacts and sometimes it will artifact in 15 minutes.

3Dmark will always artifact at the same point in time under the same circumstances. I find it very reliable in detecting artifacts.(I find in 3dmark05 when I oced my 9800pro/xt too mcuh it would always artifact when the seamonster scene came around)

ATi tool is not all that graphicalyl dmeanding and somewhat buggy.

RTHDRIBL will more likely crash your pc than artifact. It heats your video card unlike any other program I've ever seen and it will test the working order of the mosfets and your cooling. As far as artifacts fior RTHBRIDL, its there, its jsut hard to see.
