Summary:
For those short on time - any way i can test if my usb connectors working properly WITHOUT buying any special hardware etc.
-------------------------------------------
Those who have a little bit more time - read on.....
First things first - i have a intel 440 BX based celeron dual booting Win98 and Win2k professional. When i assembled the system a couple of years ago, i (stupidly) choose not to buy usb ports - even though my motherboard supports USB.
As it turns out i bought a new HP LaserJet 1000 a couple of weeks back and the only way this sucker can communicate with my system is - right - USB !! So, i go and buy one of those USB connectors and bingo everything should be fine, shouldn't it? Alas!! Since then i've been trying to make either of the two windows to "see" my printer but to no avail. I've tried changing the USB connector (at the cost of undermining my dignity with the vendor who was, rightly i guess, adamant about the cable being fine), reversing its orientation (where it connects to the motherboard - and yes i'm doing it at the right place !!) and almost everything else.
As for the software bit under the section "USB COntrollers etc." in the device manager of Windows 98, i can see a "Intel USB Controller..." and a "USB Root Hub" - but these have been present since the day i installed windows i.e. even before i installed either the connector/printer, so i guess that is of no help. I tried removing these devices from the device manager - so windows does detect them the next time i boot but then thats it. To top it all, i even removed Win98 (since i don't use it for much other than gaming, could afford to do that) but no success.
Now presuming that the printer is alright (okay, i know it can have probs too, but i wan't to be absolutely sure myself before i call their tech. support guys) - where can i go?? I'm still not absolutely sure whether my USB connectors are correct/ securely plugged in - so is their any way i can do that without buying any additional hardware (like usb hubs etc.) or can anybody help me out with where else the problem might lie...
Thanks for ur patience in making it till here !!
