Testing power supply

Thinking of getting one of the power supply testers that allows you to turn it on while not connected to the mobo so I can verify the voltages.

Can I disconnect the mobo power connectors, but leave all the drive power connectors connected and turn on the power supply? Would that do any damage to anything? It would be a pain to disconnet all the drive connectors and I especially don't want to mess with the power connectors to the hard drives. When I connected those it seemed there was quite a bit of stress being applied to the connector on the drives so I don't want to take a chance of breaking those.

well u could just use a spare molex connector to test the voltages, although it'd only be the 12v and 5v rails that can be tested that way. I've been able to test my 3.3v rail by using the leads on my multimeter to an orange wire and black grounding wire on my atx connector. If u wanna test the psu without it being attached to anything, u could try using an unwinded paper clip and connect the green wire on the atx connector to a black ground wire on the same connector, and turn on the psu. I can't guarantee it'll work tho. good luck
 
I found the best psu tester is water and a screwdriver. Just pour and poke. Repeat if still alive. (IM JUST KIDDING!)

Where are you getting the tester? I always wanted one of these...
 
Anything short of a multimeter, i'd reccomend hotwiring the psu via the (yellow and black is it?) connector right near the clip in the middle. More seasoned pro's will be able to help more.

I saw an Antec power supply tester in Office Depot a while back. All it is is a plug that plugs into the (20 pin power connector) with a switch on it. I think it may also have some status lights on it.

I tested both a spare PCIEx connector and a drive connector, the 12V was 12.00-12.01V and the 5V was 5.12V. My bios reports 11.64-11.71V on the 12V line and I want to test the mobo connector to be sure it also shows good voltage since I have a Dual rail power supply. I don't know how the dual rails are allocated but I want to be sure I don't have 1 good one and 1 bad one.
