hi,

i have a situation here. i found a cpu & mobo in my house and i wanted to test to see if this setup was functioning. so i looked around and found an ATX PSU in some dark corner. i plugged everything in, but nothing seemed to happen. i was wondering if the PSU might be bad? does anyone know how i can test the PSU? i heard from a friend that i can connect 2 of the female sockets on the connection that usually feeds power to the mobo, and this should power the PSU on (that is if it is no broken). has anyone heard of this? if this is true, can someone tell me which connectors i would need to connect? any info would be greatly appreciated. thanx 🙂

At the mobo plug jumper the green to any black with a paperclip. Some units won't power up w/o a 5v load, so plug in a HDD to any power plug.
 
You can purchase an ATX PSU tester for around $9. The work great, especially for tweeking your case airflow. Hook up the fans and the tester to the PS unit, and start it up.
