okay, just wanted to let some people know how these cards ran on my system, so maybe you can compare when chosing a video card.

I have the following pc:

enermax 431 PSU
2500+ @ 2.2 ghz 38c 🙂
512 Mb DDR400 ocz
7200rpm WD hdd
Abit mobo

On the 6800oc in 3dmark 03 I scored the following in 3 test

350/700 stock scored 9440
350/765 scored 9651
350/850 (stable btw) 10341

On the 6600gt AGP I scored the following in 3 tests

All test at stock

6721
6409
6288

now although the 6800oc scored higher, I do notice that the 6600gt plays the games I play a little smoother, like Cs:s and HL2

the fram rate of both games are identical on both cards

now I'm no specialist or anything, but running the 6800oc and the 6600gt I DID notice the 6600gt displays the graphics a little more detailed, like the shaders and textures, something just looks better when I run the 6600gt. I thought it was just me and maybe there was no differance, but when I ran the 6800oc, the graphics didn't look the same, semed to be a little less detailed.

Anyway, thats just my $0.02

Also:

when I hit the windows button to jump to desktop with 6800oc, it takes a good 6 seconds to refresh to the desktop screen, and with the 6600gt its almost instant...

another $0.02

nice but it also could be drivers depending on each system (my system only takes the 67.03 forceware) did you unlock the pipes/vertex?

Wow...I would have thought the 3DMark scores would have been a little closer.

Thanks for the info

I am surprised how much the 6800 layed the smackdown. I don't think the 6600 is really what people want it to be.

If you can find a good deal on a 6800 vanilla, it's the way to go for sure.

I don't think it's possible that they look different. They are the same card, just diff number of pipes and bandwidth. The 6800OC should be faster at just about everything, at least the benchmarks I've seen suggest that.

i wouldn't even bother with the 6600GT at this point, not with it still sitting at $240. the 6800OC used here is $249.99 from outpost.com. BFG 6800OC. I wonder if it would be possible to investigate your negitive comments about the 6800, as this is the exact desicion i'm trying to make right now---6600GT vs BFG 6800OC. i can't really understand why the 6800OC crapped all over the 6600GT, yet the 6600GT seemed to have higher visual quality. was there some discrepency with AA and AF?

I'm trying to decide between these two cards and every time I make up my mind to get the 6800 OC I read something like this. I don't care which card gets better 3dmark scores - all I care about is in-game performance and from the statement above it sounds like the 6600 GT gets a BETTER frame rate in HL2 than the 6800 ... Has anyone else tried to test this? Btbam - did you compare in-game framerates?

Doesn't sound like it.
Matters to me. Hell, I was just about to ask.

What clock speed is that 6600GT running at? If it is 500/1000 you should be scoring closer to 8000.

My 6600gt is clocked at 500/1000 and my score was 7845. That was with a 2.6c@3.0, 512 ddr400, and XFX 6600gt.
