You should be able to tell the difference between all the sections on this image.

If you can't you should adjsut your monitor's settings (or get a new monitor). I can tell them all apart, on my Apple LCD, but haven't tried the PC w/ thhe 19" Viewsonic CRT on it yet.

I wonder how many people have thier monitors at the correct brightness...

Pretty good. I used a popular home-theater calibration disc to set the brightness on my monitor.

I used to have a program that came with this translucent strip that you'd put on your monitor. You'd adjust one slider after another until everything looked right in the tests. It came with my creative geforce 256 DDR IIRC.

Haha
I can't remember the name of it actually....borrowed it from my brother.
Besides, after the comment you made in another thread about Penny Arcade not being funny.....

Wow. I was pretty close, actually. Upped my brightness a few notches. Now I'm really close. Thanks.

Anyway to fix this? I have brightness set where its good for me.. and contrast at full.. I lowered contrast still didnt help.. increased and decreased brightness.. is there somthing else?

btw, I have a 17" Sony Trinitron :(

It might jsut be that the monitor is old and worn out. In that case, time for a new monitor. How old is it?

Almost 4 years.. I doubt thats the problem.

It still reproduces colors much brighter and more vibrantly then most others I've seen..

I had this problem on my Samsung 955df. The black wasn't really black, but more of a really dark gray. You couldn't tell the difference in the darks. I got a 900nf and it is worlds better. My laptop has the best screen ever though: 15" UXGA with Ultrasharp at 1600x1200. It is nice :).

I had a 5 year old Sony that I though tlooked pretty good until I bought a new Viewsonic and put them next to each other. I couldn't beleive how HORRIBLE the old Sony looked next to it.

Download the Nokia Monitor Test, it has instructions and helps you adjust a bunch of different settings

CRTs wear out. the electrons eat away at the mask or grille.

It must not have been a new Trinitron. My friend bought a Flat Viewsonic the other day from CompUSA. It looks like sh1t. I didn't have the heart to tell him because he paid almost $400 for it.
