Test scores are in: Northeast still has dumbest drivers

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The tiny state of Rhode Island still ranks rock bottom in terms of driving knowledge, according to a national test conducted by GMAC Insurance. Oregon drivers answered the most questions correctly.

The test revealed that about one in 11 licensed drivers in the United States would fail a state drivers test, according to GMAC Insurance.

Rhode Island ranked last year, also, with an average score of 77. Last year, Oregon's average score was 89, which still placed at the top of the rankings that year.

Based on average scores, northwestern states generally ranked highest while the bottom-ranking states were mostly in the northeast. One exception was Vermont, which ranked third. Washington state drivers ranked second. Drivers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia ranked at the bottom, with D.C. finishing just ahead of Rhode Island.

The 20-question test was based on questions asked in state driver's license examinations. A score of 70 or higher is required to pass a standard state test.

The failure rate for drivers in northeastern states was about 16 percent, according to GMAC Insurance. The failure rate for drivers in northwestern states was from one to seven percent.

The test and an accompanying survey were completed by 5,288 licensed drivers including at least 100 from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The survey asked about responses to specific driving situations.

(Cheat alert: The following paragraph includes some answers to the test.)

Approximately one in three drivers said they usually do not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. At least one out of five drivers did not know that pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way. At least one in five also did not know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain after a dry spell.

I - and most others I think - have thought that New Jersey and New York drivers were amongst the worst, and now I suppose those stereotypes are grounded in evidence.

I just watched a deal on the news about the most unfriendly drivers vs the most friendly. Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York were the angriest...while Seattle, Atlanta, and I think Nashville were the most polite.

What?

I mean, they're not too bad...but I certainly wouldn't say exceptionally polite.

As for the northeast sucking, I have to agree with that...aggressive drivers are one thing, but stupid, unpredictable drivers are twice as bad.

And Seattle doesn't?

I scored a 90.
Tests like this are useless. What matters is the actual ability to drive. Who cares if you know the proper coloring scheme of warning signs on the road. As long as the message gets across.

Pull up data about the number of accidents or insurance claims involving moving vehicle incidents and take total number of licensed drivers of course.

The metropolitan area of Seattle has 4 million...and they're all crammed.

No, I'm pretty sure Arizona has the dumbest drivers on earth..

People here go like hell everywhere they drive! If the speed limit is 75 on the interstate, then they're all doing 90+. Even the truckers.

It's seriously out of control on I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix.

WTF?

I think the metro area has like 3 or 4 million.

Yeah, in like 1930.

LOL. University of WA alone has 50k.

BTW, I know you were exaggerating.

Thank you for taking the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test. A score of 70% or better is considered passing on a state written drivers test. Based on your answers, you have the following score: 100.0

BlancoNino always has a comment to make about Seattle in any thread relating to cities. He thinks it is the best city in the whole wide world. In reality, Seattle doesn't even have 100k people, and it is inhabited by munchkins.

Do I? I actually would hate to live in Seattle. I'm glad I live on the other side of Washington.

It's closer to 600K in the city. But beacause of their small size, being munchkins and all, they only count as 100K full size people.

Metro area populations are silly.

Why? If the issue is highway congestion, then the population of the surrounding area does matter.

I took the test, got a 100%. The questions were pretty basic stuff, it's kind of disturbing that people did so poorly.

Because I said so! I just said that because people always throw the metro area into an argument about cities. Gets em goin.

The population density of seattle is very low compared to nyc and boston. Driving in Boston is the absolute worst, NYC sucks really bad, and so does Chicago. Without having ever driven in Seattle, I think I would rather drive there.

Dumbest/most careless drivers have to be in the South.

Let see, soccermoms driving minivans full of screaming kids, they are doing everything in the minivans BUT driving.

Redneck dudes driving beatup trucks while kissing/making out with their cousin/sister/mom...aka wives..and drinking moonshine/homemade brew at the same time.

They are so dumb that they have to pay the gal at the DMV to let them pass the written test

Edit: The test is CLOSED, darn the ATOT effect.
