Test drove the new Mazda6 V6 today...

If you haven't noticed, I'm in the market for a sub-20K car. I was primarily looking at 00-02 Accord SE, Altima 2.5 S & Mazda 6 v6 5 speed...

Accord LX v6 '00 was pretty nice.. they were asking 19K for it, yea right. I didn't even bother with the prices, today was to get the feel of each cars to narrow down my selection. The Nissan dealership @ Salem, NH was very busy and I ended up leaving after a 30 min wait. And lastly I went to the Mazda dealership close to my campus. I asked for the Mazda6 v6 test drive and soon, I was in it for a very sweet treat.

The ride was amazingly smooth, very comfortable handling and talk about an 'umph' it had @ 220 hp with a mere 3200 lb body. As soon as I got onto I-495, I decided to experience this bad boy. With a sweet revv, the car was bordering 90mph already with crazy acceleration.. the difference between my Sonata V6 '96 was like heaven and hell. I think I scared crap out of the dealer though, he was subdued throughout the whole ride sitting quietly at the passenger seat. Mazda 6 being spankin' new in US (arrived just last dec), they didn't offer any financing programs or anything at all for V6. As for 4 cylinder, interest rate was still high @ 4-5% with my credit rating being 700+ (excellent).

I gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole ride. Do you think I could get it around $17K for a v6 + sports package? ($22.5K MSRP). eh, I could dream. 😀

Man, Altima's got a serious competition for me. v6 gets pretty pricey with Altys... hmm..

I hope I could push it for $16K if I offer to pay ALL with CASH.

<--in a fantasy world.

Sorry, FYI paying in cash means nothing to the dealerships.
If anything, they prefer financing.

The Altima 3.5 SE has 245 HP and gobs more torque with a weight of 3200 lbs as well.
Too bad the the interior sucks ass.

Oh, and stop being an attention whore 😉
No, seriously... stop it.

No chance but you can keep dreamin'

You'd sh!t your pants if you knew the Mazda6 loss leader prices here 😀

Yup, cash doesn't mean anything to a dealership. I did see a lot of Mazda 6's at my local dealer, but I imagine they are going to go very fast.

The Sunday newspaper is in the car, don't tell me you want me to walk UP the stairs, OPEN the 3 doors, unlock my car, get the paper, lock my car, close the 3 doors, walk DOWN the stairs and post it on here?

Ugh, fine. I'll go walk into the living room and see what the loss-leaders in LA are going for.

Yes, exercise is good. Sitting down all day and posting on ATOT doesn't do much in the exercise department. 😀

Argh, you people are impossible to please.

Now I am curious what the Mazda6 loss leader prices are.

what the heck is loss price? how do u find them? sunday newspaper doesn't say anything, just the usual spams of prices & cars!

Not a freaking chance in hell 🙂

I'd take the v6 mazda over the altima but I'd take the v6 altima over the mazda. I wouldn't take an accord unless it was a current gen with a 6 speed and V6.

Hondas are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GAY on resale that in my opinion there is just no frigging point in buying one used. You look at the price they wanted for that '00 and the price others go for and hondas lose about $500 after 20 years and half a million miles. Rossman, having now driven his for months, could break even at least on his and possibly even make money on it. Hondas suck nuts to buy used, but if you buy it new you can drive it for a while then sell it no worries at all!

Hey you might get it done on a new ferrari, but yeah anything in most people's price ranges no way. 😱

Ok we had a short detour to Dairy Queen so we could walk the dogs and get a Pecan Praline Parfait but I'm back.

Here are some LOSS LEADER ADS from The Sunday Oregonian newspaper:

2003 VW Jetta $14,988 (Power windows/locks, tilt, cruise)

2003 VW Passat $19,995 (automatic)

2002 Honda Insight automatic $15,944 (4.9% up to 60 months)

2003 Honda Civic DX $13,444 (4 door automatic)

2003 Honda Civic LX $14,544 (4 door)

2003 Honda CR-V $19,344 (automatic)

2003 Honda Accord $19,944 (4 door automatic)

2003 Honda Accord EX-V6 $26,344 (coupe automatic)

2003 Honda Odyssey EX w/ leather $28,844 (4.9% up to 60 months)

2003 Toyota Camry LE automatic $17,797 (I've seen this as low as $16,797)

2003 Toyota Corolla LE automatic $14,997

2003 Mazda6 sport sedan $16,788 (air conditioning, power windows, PDL, tilt, cruise, CD & more) 1 @ this price

I only saw 1 Mazda ad where as there are 4 Honda ads. This must be a slow weekend.

Towards the end of the year that's when the loss leader ads get really good (i.e. Honda Accord LX auto for $15,444).

What's the special deal with those loss leaders again? How hard is it to get a car at that price? They only offer one at that price so you have to be the first to get in with it right? Will they screw you in any way once you're there?
is Loss Leader a local dealer? I am lost here.
No, it's something any dealership can do. They take a loss on one car to lure people in. I think they put the VIN in the ad so that they can't say "Oh sorry that one's sold" or crap like that.

What Skoorb said.

The only catches with loss leaders are:
1) There's only 1-7 of them per dealership, after those cars have been sold you're SOL.

2) What you see is what you get, so if they ONLY have white Honda Accord LX manuals for $15,600 then that's all they have, you have no choice in options, trim or color unless you wanna pay MORE, a lot more.

3) They are required by law (at least here in Oregon) to list the last few digits of the car's VIN that they are selling.

4) When we bought our Accord last June, they had 7 SE's specially priced at $17,244 (sticker $19,500) when we left 6 had been sold already and we were there when the dealership first opened it's doors.

I think a lot of people have been wondering. I've wanted to start a loss leader FAQ website but I can't think of a catchy domain name.

Any suggestions on a loss leader domain?
