test drove an '06 volvo r60s

Had someone contact me from the east coast through a website and ask if I would drive down to Berkley and test drive the car for him. He wanted some un-biased eyes on the car before he bought it and shipped it. Wow, that was fun, had it up to 90mph on i-80 in no time. Of course, I'm used to it seeing as my '91 dodge colt vista is the standard when it comes to high horsepower cars. Dealer said it was ~300 hp. Anyone else driven one?

I almost, almost, got one instead of the S70 T5SE, but the Pro-Logic stereo in the S70 tipped the scales for me and I went with the sedan.

The V70R is a cool sled, but I'd be a bit wary of the on-off throttle and numb gearbox that C&D has described in these models. Also, that engine is boosted really hard, and I'd wonder about long-term reliability. It's a 160 HP engine without boost, and a solid one, but with the extra 140 HP coming from the boost alone, that thing must be ready to pop.

The turbocharged engine is 2.3 litres. The non-turbo is 2.5 litres. The difference in displacement is made up of re-enforcement. The engine only runs about 11-12 PSI stock. I don't know of anyone who has blown one up.

The 5-speed is a little vague, with long-ish throws, but nothing terrible. The throttle's pretty typical of any turbocharged car I've driven. Scratch that, it's better than most.

There are plenty of people running 15-16 PSI of boost through the 2.3 litre inline 5 with stock internals and not hitting reliability problems, it's certainly not "ready to pop".

I had a V70 T5 for a while and the steering was so numb I got pins and needles in my hands.

Being FWD it was a pig to lay down power from rest but a beast when moving. Now you can pick up the same motor in the Focus ST, rated @225hp, for next to no money and with much better traction. I test drove that and it was a hoot.

I haven't had an issue with the steering, but I have the alignment set with a little extra toe out and a little extra front camber along with running the front tires 6PSI higher than the rears, so she's set up a little different from stock.

That said, the T5 is not a sportscar. It's a comfy, fast-ish, daily driver that's reasonably competent in the corners. When I want to turn up the wick, I grab the keys to the 951. 😉
