Test drove a C55 today

Test drove a C55 AMG and it was amazing. It was in immaculate condition both inside and out. A ton of power which is a given. MB usually knocked for ride comfort but it was a nice ride. Given, I was only in there for 20mins or so but no complaints on the ride.

What's not amazing? The price for a now 4 year old car. $30k with 30k miles.

If you look closely those rims are from Mercedes. And they are probably the same size as the original just a bit more chromed up. But the extra tristar just ruins the car. If I would take the car, I'd prolly hang the extra tristar in my garage or room.

was just a random example...my buddy has an 06 C55 (his fault that I ended up getting an 06 E350 4Matic for the wife) and he has no points left before he got the car...

He has low profile performance winters, big mistake since he lives on a hill :laugh:

not sure those are AMG rims... it has the tristar centre cap, but you can get those.

I've driven both and all I can say is the S65 blew me away. The C55 was fun. It was great with such a sweet engine sound, but the S65... it's something else. There is nothing like a Twin Turbo V12. You don't even know the engine is running, it's perfectly smooth, perfectly quiet, engine noise is quiet, thrust is linear and seemingly infinite, it's like a space ship.

Obviously I assume he loves the C55, but how has it been so far in terms of repairs? At the end of the day, its a MB...so I can't expect it to last like a Toyota. I've been reading that some C55s have a ton more problems than others. I guess that might be a given with any car though.

The one I am looking at is a CPO which is nice. I could always get a 3rd party to warranty the car after the 1 year MB warranty.

I don't know about the states, but MB dealerships suck (at least the one near him). His C55 had some head gasket issues at 80k km and the dealership claimed it is tear and wear and wanted 6k to fix it. He talked to corporate and they said they'll cover it. This was a CPO too. Head gasket at 80k km is bullshit.

my wife's 06 E350 showed SRS (airbag) error and I took it in and it was serviced under warranty. Apparently there is some stupid coil loaded contact that go faulty.

Germans like to make things more complicated than they needed be. Higher potential for failure. But when they work, they are beautiful.

original price tag is 150k, 3 years later it's 50k. There is 100k there

I am pretty sure you will not spend 100k on repairs for the length of time you own that car?

S600 is not an AMG... I thought op wanted an AMG? Personally, I would not, but it's not my call.

And I am pretty sure all those used AMGs are being bought.

I like to push boundaries 🙂 I was looking at the S65 in places like Cleveland figuring they would be cheaper and they are. Trying to get my buddy to get the S65 :laugh:

C55 was a bit small for my taste. That is why I got the E350 4Matic for the wife. The land boat fits me better. Frigging easy to speed in it though.

Have you priced insurance for a S65, have you priced repairs? Matainance and repair costs will run you 3-4k per year, insurance, halfway decent coverage will run 6k a year, and this is only for the S600, not even S65AMG. Just because the entry price is low does not mean you can afford it, it's a common misconception of many luxury cars.

Here go buy yourself a formerly $170k, 3 year old 600+hp car and don't pay attention to the actual costs of keeping something like that on the road, legally.

Mercedes are not dead reliable. I have a 2006 E500 4Matic, it's been in the shop 3 times in the 1 year I've had it. Scheduled maintenance is not cheap. Insurance is not cheap, and it is nothing even close to the S65.


as for the other poster, of course, the S65 AMG depreciates 80K in the first year, it won't cost as much, but it still takes S class money to pump into a car like that. You cannot cross-shop based on price. A $40k S65 is not comparable to a $40k 335i or a $40K C55 even.
