Am I the only person having this problem with Test Drive Unlimited??

Many people may not like this game but I've just started playing it and I love it.
Problem is, it hangs during the save screen and I just have to use the Task Manager (Alt + Ctrl + Del) to close it (End Task).

How do I fix this issue?

I had a very similar issue - as did many others.

Does this prevent you from entering the game at all at this point?

(And it is a great game by the way, it's probably the longest lasting game I've had in a while - I still play regularly).

No it doesn't prevent me from entering the game but what it does is that whenever I leave a building or race, it hangs on the "Saving Game..." screen.

How did you fix it?

Myself, I reset the graphics options to their default which (for whatever reason) let me get into the game, then let it save and exited. I was able to turn everything back up upon reentering and the game didn't freeze again.

Here's a more recent thread with other fixes (and a link to another thread in the second post); you should be able to find something that helps between the two.

Its an easy fix but took me loads of searching to figure it out myself a while ago, I see you're using Vista x64 Ultimate as well, in C: there is a hidden folder called "Program Data", inside that you will find a "Test Drive Unlimited" folder, in that folder delete everything EXCEPT cdkey.txt It will work now. I agree with NYHoustonman, it's a great game and I play it regularly. If you have reached Expert Level try Hardcore Mode on a steering wheel like Logitech Momo on the Racetrack in the game, it is as close as you're going to get to simulating those exotics on a track.

I just installed my 780i board last night but I'm have a few little issues reloading the system so...

I'll post back here when everything is up and running again.

TDU might not cause any problems though, being a fresh install.

:p

Well, I wouldn't go that far :p. It's a closer simulation than any other road racer (that's the big draw to me, that I can drive wherever I want), but on the track games like GTR/GTL blow it away (I recently went back... everything but the graphics, right down to the force feedback, is quite a bit better). I have mixed feelings on Hardcore, too... It seems like all they did was make the cars lighter, so you have less grip but at the same time (and I'm sure you've noticed this) the cars fly, literally.

Try flying over cops chasing you. Thats fun. And hard.

Yeah, I agree outside that Racetrack hardcore mode is very frustrating, the cars do feel very floaty and take off at even 20 degree inclines. The game for the most part feels like a true driving simulator of road going sport cars. What I like most about the track and hardcore mode is that you can correct a lot of slides with counter-steering and proper throttle modulation just like you can in real life. Whereas in GTL and GTR 2 if you overcook a corner the car is almost unrecoverable.

I didnt have that problem with any version of the game, but I will say the 1.66 patch fixes a lot of issues.

Other than that I cant suggest anything, I'm having too much fun playing it.
No game in the past 2 years has been able to keep my interest for as long as this one.

EDIT: In fact I like it so much I was thinking of writing a basic walkthrough and posting it on GameFAQS. Only a few pages have been done on that game and mostly for the Xbox360 verison.

Okay, all has been well since my fresh OS install. Haven't had any issues with the game so far, and I hope it stays that way.

It is a really fun game. I like the fact that I have literally over 1000 miles of road to just drive, drive, drive. When I get bored of one thing, I do another.

Very nice.
