I'd like everyone to know that they need to add in the cost of HDTV if there going to compare the typical PC Gamer setup to a Xbox 360.

it looks good, but not nearly as good as GT4. honestly, we stopped needing this much horsepower in a videogame system a long time ago. Graphics, much like processors have already outstripped the pace of game development by a long shot.

Sure dude. The minute you send me a copy of GTA3 which doesn't run like ass or a copy of Vice City which doesn't look like it... The minute you send me a copy of Gran Turismo 4 that'll run on the PC, I won't utter another word about it. Btw I don't need a 6800u, my 9800p runs current games in twice the resolution consoles do.

Agreed, color me unimpressed... The background reminded me of low budget B films where they act against a painted background, the trees & buildings all looked the same.

Lol, so you include the cost of a monitor for the PC, but not an HDTV for the shitbox360? Repeat after me, kiddies: "Bias". See this is what I mean, misinformation & bias are the only way you people can make an argument & justify the pos, but god forbid you rethink your stance on it On top of that oversight you have the fact that a $150 PC can outclass current consoles; it only takes a ti4x00 and a 2ghz or 2000+ with 256-512mb ram.

150 dollars? ti4x00? you are a tad optimistic.

well more like completely unreasonable. first of all you are comparing to consoles years old. essentially obsolete to obsolete. when they just came out the pc's they went up against would have cost massive amounts if they could even touch them. not to mention these "obsolete" consoles still hold their own when games take advantageof every last bit of their hardware. while the best pc hardware tends to have to wait for the majority of software to slowly catch up to its abilities over a long time.

and you can't play the lastest fighting games and such on pc's for any amount of money. so really, stop being so childish..each type of system has its own place.
So we should only make the comparison for the first year of the 5 year cycle, when consoles can compete? And ignore it for the next 4, when they can't? New games can push any hardware to its limits, I don't know what you're talking about there. Neither, by the sound of it, do you. You can't play certain games on the PC because the money's in making console games, which in turn is because the majority of people think a gaming PC costs more than a car and must be upgraded every 2 months and so buys consoles instead. It's upsetting to see people on a tech board jumping in the same boat, you should know better.

pc's gonna cost more if you want to compete with consoles when they are new. if you wait, you will lose time you could be enjoying gaming at high quality..adn while you wait, the console will drop in price rapidly too further negating the point of waiting on pc hardware. maybe 2 years go by until the pc hardware is reasonably priced with a good software base that actually takes full advantage of it. hell..why not wait longer than and get an even more powerful card for less. that is the curse of the pc market. and never will it drop to the point where it competes with the console anyways, so the whole point of talking about "competing" is total ludicrous bullsh*t. an xbox that can pull of doa ultimates graphics http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/566/566556/imgs_1.html now costs what? 150 dollars? even if you are an insane sh*thead that thinks you can buy an athlon system with ti4600 or whatever for anywhere near that amount.. you will end up running TODAYS games at resolutions with lowered settings to achieve decent framerates, or be stuck playing old games. the console will always play todays games.

alpha geeks exist in their own little world...scrimping saving, tweaking, saving parts, pouring over hardware specs to plan upgrades. thats fine and all until they get religious about it and lose all reason. they can't see how normal people use and choose their products. just look how angry gurck is at the ipod for stomping the competition and taking 80% market share. he just doesn't get it.

With the old video card, a ti4600 (which wasn't new when I bought it btw; they'd been out for over six months), my PC could still be handling new games at image quality settings far higher than consoles, and will for a while yet; 10x7 high settings on average. I played through Far Cry on it the first time around in 10x7 with very high detail.

That's fine, so long as you don't mind playing at 5 FPS. I could only play Far Cry at 800 x 600 on a 9700 Pro, which is something close to twice as fast as your ti4600.

LOL, this argument will never die! Gurck, your logic is flawed--but rest assured you can buy XBox 360 controllers and use them on the PC. But you're gonna have to upgrade to Longhorn first ($149) and you'll have to wait until the end of 2006 to do that. Oh, and when you upgrade to Longhorn you'll need a card that supports Unified Shader Model ($300) which the XBox 360 already supports. Its probably a good idea to upgrade your mobo ($120) and CPU ($180) at the same time to support Longhorn's advanced capabilities. If you have less than 1GB RAM, you'll need to up that as well ($150).

All you ATOTers who bought the Dell 2005fpw back when it was $350...how I ENVY you! Y'all have got a great monitor (perhaps with aspect ratio issues?) for the XBox 360--dual inputs mean your PC and your console will live happily ever after!

You're doing something wrong, FC runs in 10x7, v.high detail on the 4600, 12x10 med detail.

UNC, I'm not about to buy xbox controllers, thanks for the heads up though... Will all those upgrades make games look as bad as the video you linked?

Whatever floats your boat, I guess, but FC only runs at 21.7 FPS on your card at 12x10, even with a pretty quick CPU. Even the 32 FPS you get at 10x7 can't be steady, either. My 9700 Pro could run just fine at 10x7 for the most part, but became unplayable when there was a lot of action onscreen.

The thing is, I'm much more a PC enthusiast than a console one - it's just your stupid, incorrect blanket statements I take exception to. The fact of the matter is that, IMO, PCs and consoles are meant to do different things, and both have their place. The XBox 360 will be much more powerful than even the fastest PC for at least several months, all the while being much easier to integrate into a home theater and much cheaper. I fail to see why that should get your panties so bunched up.

Only experienced choppiness in 10x7 v.high (my preferred settings; detail > reso) in one part; the night-time map with the pontoon bridge - and only in one part of it, if I went around to the right instead of taking the bridge. This isn't a fast gaming cpu by any means either; it's a p4b 2.67.

My 'panties are so bunched up' because consoles hurt gaming so much. In the "lucky" case where a console game is even made available for the PC, it's a port that looks like crap due to being developed for old hardware - consoles are "new" for at most 18 months; past that, they're old for another ~40 months if we're giving them a 5 year lifespan, so for the majority of the time they're slow and outdated. But that's not all; we have contracts like Rockstar's with Sony, which specifies that the GTA series be exclusive to the ps for a year.

God would all the PC/console flamewars STOP?

I have a PC, and its great for certain games. FPS games will ALWAYS be better on the PC. Flight games are better on PC. Naturally you can do other things on PC, but this has nothing to do with that. No one said you should REPLACE your PC with a console.

I also have a console, and it is MUCH better for other games, like sports games, and multiplayer games.

Obviously both have exclusive games.

Now shut up, both sides.

Watching the video, it looks less in awe compared to the pics. Doesn't look like anything better than a very high end PC can do. There is even pop up on some of the trees.

How many current XBox games run *slow* on the console? How many for the PS2?? Do you even know what you're talking about? IF a console game EVAR ran slow, it would get slammed in reviews, it wouldn't sell a single copy and the developer would lose credibility and MS/Sony would bitch them out two and think twice about renewing their license. Even Gran Turismo 4 on an "old" PS2 runs at 60fps. I WISH we had that level of reliability on the PC, but I know its next to impossbile--too many variations across systems.
