What can I reasonable expect from a new self-driving Model S?

Can I just punch in an address and sit back to watch videos while it takes me there?

Or is it not at that level yet?
 
Um, maybe 20 years from now?

IMO the only way true self-driving will ever occur would be if they had a way of integrating some sort of machine learning into it. I don't see that happening, or them having the critical mass yet.

That's what I thought, but a look at their ordering page recently showed this:

What they describe here sounds pretty much like what we see in that video.
 
There's a class action lawsuit that's starting up because Tesla's description isn't even remotely accurate as compared to the current capabilities. Tesla didn't even have autonomous emergency braking until they were forced to begin rolling it out after being called out by Consumer Reports last week, and of the 8 cameras that's built in, the software may be only using 2.
 
Watch some YouTube videos - it's great in 5-mph city traffic.

It's terrible on the open road. It needs nicely painted road lines yellow/white to follow or it will veer way of course.

From what I understand that just means you are buying a car that will be capable of full level 5 once they release the software to do it. That functionality isn't there today, but in theory cars sold today equipped like that will be able to do it.

Yeah, the very next line below the pasted screenshot says: "Please note that Self-Driving functionality is dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary widely by jurisdiction. It is not possible to know exactly when each element of the functionality described above will be available, as this is highly dependent on local regulatory approval."

So, basically you are buying the promise that some day in the future is will work. It sucks that they are charging people who are leasing the car for this, as there is a very real chance that it will never work during the term of their shortest (2 year) leases. (if ever.) There were things that the V1 autopilot was touted to be able to do that never panned out (and I still maintain never will.)

I can see them learning that people are useless creatures that infest the planet and driving us all off of cliffs in sort of a murder-suicide event.
