Man I dunno about that steering wheel. I drive with my hand on the top of the wheel a LOT. I wonder how weird U-turns would be...

I'll hold my breath until I can try it in-person. Maybe it's awesome. Maybe. And maybe someone will come out with an aftermarket wheel kit LOL.
 
I'll admit I'm interested, but I've got my Tesla, and probably going to fight the temptation to upgrade until the 520 mile battery range comes into "normal" models (like the long range S). The revised Glass Roof should go a long way to making the Model X feel larger inside than it currently does.
 
Some thoughts...
  • I'm curious if the updated MCU will be available as an upgrade to older Tesla vehicles? Tesla's infotainment system is fine for the most upfront tasks, but ugh... Tesla keeps tacking on secondary features that are terribly slow. I timed the YouTube "app" earlier out of curiosity, and it took 33 seconds to open.
  • I'm glad they finally made black trim standard on all of the cars.
  • That steering wheel.... yikes. I'm really hoping that it's just an option and likely intended for the Plaid variants. But I'm really, REALLY not fond of their removal of physical controls with that wheel.
  • I'm hoping that their cluster screen is still going to contain multiple sources of information. It's hard to see, but the images appear to only contain the visualization, which is not ideal.
  • I'm glad to see that the price seemed to remain about the same. EV adoption doesn't need huge price bumps.
  • I would like to see some of these nicer range numbers come down a bit in the models. I've always been hard on EV range, because I've always found it fairly lackluster. If I can't take a 230 (total) mile trip without having to charge, what's the point? (That trip was full interstate in December, so just about the worst for EV efficiency.)
  • Better avoid dump trucks with that glass roof!
  • Does it have a heat pump like the Model Y and the latest Model 3 revision?
All in all, it seems fine overall.

Looks like the normal steering wheel will be an option. I'd have to try the yoke-style in-person to test it. Sometimes stuff that looks weird is awesome!

I don’t see stalks in that photo though. Not very promising. I have been tempted to remedy some of my issues with the Model 3 by just upgrading to the Model S, but that just brings the Model S more into parity with what I don’t like about the 3/Y.

The whole windshield wiper thing on my buddy's 3 drives me bananas! Someone needs to make an aftermarket Bluetooth stalk lol.

I've had a few times around here where it's raining lightly, and then the sky just drops out and I'm in a downpour. Of course, the wipers don't react quickly, which isn't surprising. They didn't react that quickly in my previous car (2013 Ford Taurus) either, but the difference is that my previous car had a stalk control where I could quickly adjust it while keeping my eyes on the road.

I think I heard something about them putting it on the touch screen? Honestly, I don't understand Tesla's obsession with putting everything as a digital control. I know they want to ensure that controls lack static positions, as that makes digital + physical control much more difficult. For example, with a standard wiper stalk control, if you adjusted it on the touch screen, the wheel would need to move to the proper spot. That's why I'd be fine with something like the existing steering wheel scroll wheels... just a big bigger. They should have very defined stops, but all they do is scroll through the settings in the same order as the screen (OFF > 1 > 2 > 3 > AUTO). So, if I'm on AUTO and I need some heavy windshield wiping, I just scroll down one stop.

It's for 3 reasons:

1. Streamlining production & repairs. If everything is built into a screen or touch surface, then that's less stuff to build & less stuff to break down the road. Side note, when my buddy ran a software update on his 3, it bricked his car, and the tow truck driver says he almost exclusively does Tesla pickups & a big majority of them were due to the screen going blank & the car not being fully controllable anymore. So all they have to do is swap out a screen or wiring harness & voila, back in business!

2. OTA patchable software for fixing bugs & adding features, so convenience for the manufacturer.

3. Marketing. It's the car of the future! It's also somewhat ego-driven by Musk imo. Losing sight of the CUE (the "Customer User Experience") goofs things up. There really should be a stalk. The best example of a company getting it right is the Tivo "peanut" remote:

1) It was curved in the middle & easy to hold
2) The most common buttons was right in the middle where your thumb goes.
3) All of the buttons were shaped uniquely & put in smart positions. Like the Channel up & down button was a tall rounded rectangle right where your thumb naturally rests, and the Volume was directly across from it...easy to feel in the dark!

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed using this remote back in the Tivo day...it was SUCH a good design! I feel like Tesla is great but really misses the boat on a lot of things. Like, I'd really like a HUD on it. And a wiper stalk. And a UI redesign, with Apple Carplay. One of the biggest reasons I haven't gotten a Y yet is that I really don't care for the interface all that much. My current ride has Carplay and I LOVE it!

Having the shifter on the screen doesn't bother me. I drive a manual but in an auto it isn't like I'm touching the shifter that often anyway and touching a screen rather than pulling a lever or twisting a knob I don't care. The bigger issue is having the blinkers on the steering wheel. Not so much the switches being on the steering but with the right and left blinker buttons being on the SAME SIDE!!!!! Ferrari has been doing it for years but at least they put the left blinker on the left side and right on the right.
 
So, where can I find the hardware specs on that infotainment system? I want to see if I'm going to be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 on it 🙂

I believe Elon has already said it can play Cyberpunk 2077. Computational power is supposed to be similar to PS5.
 
I won't be surprised if Tesla either gives a conventional wheel as an option or is forced to use one. The configurator lists "yoke steering" as included, implying that there are situations where it'll be optional. Maybe by the time Tesla is ready to ship.

It would have to be an Intel based system, then, as there isn't a version of Cyberpunk 2077 for ARM processors as far as I know.
