That center console looks cool but it would be a pita to actually use. You would have to look at it to change anything since you can't just feel for a button.

Uh, what about road trips? That's the real problem. I drive 200 miles one way once a week, an 8 hour charge is not going to work if it has 175 miles of range.

So, either keep a minivan around or rent?
 
I'd have to use the panel a few times during the day -- the glare is probably horrible. Hope you can see the display in direct sunlight.

I agree with the notes you posted because so many people don't consider just where their electricity is coming from. The real break won't come until we have effective, efficient, reliable mass transit and restructured land use patterns which reduce the amount of required travel.

I'm not here to shit on the Tesla; indeed I like the look and functionality of it and the performance sounds great, even if it is expensive.

No matter how eco-friendly the source for producing the electricity though, it would be too much of a burden on the system for everyone to be driving an electric vehicle as much as they currently drive their gas-powered vehicle.

We need to make mass transit a much higher priority to make more efficient use of our energy, and then have electric vehicles as a secondary option, for when transit doesn't meet a person's needs for a particular trip.

In short, we need a major paradigm shift.

Not tenable. I will never do mass transit unless it's literally all there is to do or it costs me the equivalent of $15 per gallon of gas (honestly). The country is too spread out for it anyway.

US needs a bigger energy infrastructure including grid upgrades and more nuke plants or hyroelectric or whatever. As energy demands continue to grow and then we have more and more electric cars the grid will be even more fragile than it is.

Hydrogen gets around the grid problem but it still requires more power production and it's a pipe dream anyway, there won't be anymeaningful number of hydrogen cars on the road most likely for decades.

Basically the same as the odo/tach works on todays cars. For the odo: a trigger sensor on the output shaft of the transmission usually to pulses per revolution. It then calculates the mileage based off of the ratio of the tire size and gearing.

It likely reads the tach directly from the electric motor just like a tach would be read from the pulse from one cylinder of a gasoline engine.

My fault... poorly worded questio - looks like the tac is inside the odometer, rather than being a separate dial.

You have rose tinted glasses too, where does the hydrogen come from? Hydrogen isn't an energy source, it is a storage medium like batteries. The energy still needs to come from somewhere...

There should be a 300 mile battery pack, the problem is - how much more is it going to cost you?

Could you buy it after the car (giving you two packs? but the pack could well be $10k+). The problem is the charger for the model S is built into the car rather than external like the Roadster.

Is the car actually big enough to hold your luggage/passengers for a road trip??

Combining that with a four-bar linkage hatchback rear trunk and flat folding rear seats, the Model S can accommodate a 50-inch television, mountain bike *and* surfboard simultaneously. This packaging efficiency gives the Model S more trunk space than any other sedan on the market and more than most SUVs.

For other people doing a less frequent roadtrip -

How much would it cost you to rent it? Enough gas to cover 600 miles doesn't cost much...

How much space does the battery pack take up? Is it really possible for a customer to change the battery in 5 minutes, or is it a 5 minute at the dealers job? (which they will probably charge you for, either directly or included in the price of renting).

Moreover, the floor-mounted battery pack is designed to be changed out in less time than it takes to fill a gas tank, allowing for the possibility of battery-pack swap stations.

The problem is will there be enough battery swap points for people to actually stop near them? Could they do a battery swap at a price competitive to gas? Or are they going to charge you $100+ for 300 miles?

Agreed. You'd have to take your eyes off the road much more often than with a traditional panel.
 
How would a dash/console like that work in states with no cellphone while driving laws? Arguably a full touchscreen dash is much more of a distraction than using a cellphone I would think.... You would have to look down at it for every single thing you do.
