Tesla Model S - $50,000, 300-mile range, 0-60 in 5.5s

Tesla seemed moribund not long ago. I'm surprised to see this out. I wonder how reliability is... I would quite happily buy an electric car. Not for $50,000, obviously, but I wish a mainstream manufacturer would chop-chop. I think the new prius will shortly-after-release have a plug-in variant (range won't be 160 miles, though).

100 miles would be fine for me and easily doable.

EDIT: Damn it won't be in production until Q3 in 2011. A bit early touting itself as the world's first mass-produced electric car, IMO. Especially since Ford is going to have a car next year, IIRC (just not in the US).

"The car fits seven people and their luggage: five adults and two children in rear-facing seats under the hatch inside, with luggage in the boot up front."

yea right my ass 7 people lol

7 people, not 7 fully grown adults.

$100 says this car will:

1) Never see production OR
2) Be well over $50K

My predicted outcome is that Tesla is dead before Q3 2011, but that would obviously fall under #1.

Viper GTS

Looks sweet. Nice stitching on the dash.

 Regardless of what it runs on or if it supports its claims, that is a slick-looking automobile.

Very nice.

Too bad I live in an apt building and I don't have a long enough extension cord to charge the car.

The garages at my current apartment all have electrical jacks in the ceiling.

Which Honda was it that had something more viable than this guy? Saw it on Top Gear...

Anyway, this looks pretty sweet, I'll take one in white please.

Not sure that a touch screen dash is the best idea for cars. How do you know where you're pushing without looking at the console? Also why does it need to be that big, I would think the purpose of having a touch screen is so that you can change what the controls are for.

Overall it seems the car is a step in the right direction. Hopefully it gets more practical as time moves on.

I really hate touch screens. I hate it on my HTC Titan too. I want to dial a simple phone number and I have to go through some menus instead of shortcut keying on my Treo. I guess that's also a Palm vs. WM6 thing, but still. HTC Touch is surely even more of a PITA.

On vehicles, I never really understood why people liked touch-screens. You get fingerprints all over it (especially noticeable in the sun you often see) and it's definitely not as safe as having a knob at your hands on the console because you have to look and reach. Some cars even disable it while in drive because of this.

Viper GTS

I'd have to agree. I call BS on Tesla's claims as well.

FCX.

after the $7,500 tax break, the Model S will start at just under $50,000 ? $49,900 to be exact

That makes it $57,400 list price so Viper GTS wins on point 2 already 🙂

Nice. I have outdoor parking.

I'm really doubt they will end up meeting all the claims they have placed...but I applaud them for the effort and hope they succeed. I really didn't believe they would ever make it out of the gates with the original roadster. If they can stay solvent and come out with this model...and it proves to even be 80% of what it claims to be...then they may just become viable car manufacturer.

It is rather hard to figure out where the thing is to push without a tactile feel... I mean, we can tend to get a general idea of where the object is, but other than that... feel is what tells us. My Nissan has a touch-screen in it for mostly multimedia control, but a lot of those controls are also around it. Like there are four ways to select CD 1-6 (three are discrete, one is CD UP/DOWN)... two of those are physical buttons and one is the touch screen.

And then they disable everything when you're moving. I don't think the Nissan will even disable it if it detects someone of proper weight (i.e. not a child, which they already detect that to disable the airbag) in the front seat (since they could adjust the stuff for you).
