That is ludicrous. $10K option for 0.4 seconds.

when i read these things, i can't help thinking ... well, a parallel between SSDs and this.
these cars are first generation. this tech seems awesome, but it will pale in a comparison to what we'll have in a few years.

A 12.5% performance increase is ludicrous? Seems pretty reasonable to me if you're already putting down for a $120K car.

Electric performance is neat. The Zombie 222 goes 0 to 60 in 1.94 seconds: (electrified Mustang)

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/...4-second-0-60-time-builder-sets-200-mph-goal/

The White Zombie ('72 Datsun) did it in 1.8 seconds: (also electric)

http://news.discovery.com/autos/dri...r-is-a-72-datsun-does-0-60-in-1-8-seconds.htm

The Grimsel electric hit it in 1.7:

http://gas2.org/2014/11/11/swiss-electric-racer-goes-0-60-mph-in-1-7-seconds/

The only problem is, well, you know...noise, vibration, etc.

I think you're playing loose with the term "a few years"

I mean... it's been a few years already since the Model S was even released (June 2012) and it's still the only mass produced Tesla vehicle. I thinking we're looking at quite a bit more than "a few years" before we see a noticeable jump.

Electric motor performance is incredible. When it comes to raw performance they are really only limited by the amount of electrons you can get to them. So they will continue to improve yearly. What we really need is a battery breakthrough in the form of charge time, charge capacity, and/or cost reduction. After that happens, things get really interesting.

I have a friend with a P85D, and would not be at all surprised if he springs for Ludicrous Mode, just because he finds it intellectually interesting and the money is a non-issue for him. That being said, I have experienced Insane Mode, and found it as crazy and dramatic an experience as I can imagine as a passenger, so I don't know that I'd bother with Ludicrous Mode.

Looks like they boosted the HP to 762 for new option. This is more than the Dodge Hellcat.

That's the sum of the maximum power output of the two motors; however the P85D had a sum of 691 HP but never pulled more than 415 KW of energy from the battery, or around 556 HP.

If you're driving a beater that does 0-60 in 17s, yes spending $10K to decrease it 04.s is probably not a wise decision. In a car that's already sub-4s, that's an incredibly cheap performance mod.

Call me when it has a sane weight and can do that 1.1G number on a skid pad.

Or you can get a superbike for 15k. Just need a huge set of balls to get those under 3s to 60 :D

wow. This stuff is really improving their brand recognition IMO. Every time I see a Tesla now I react in respect-- 'there goes a performance car'.

/thread.

electric motors have torque. This could happen in a Prius if they wanted it to.

AWD has a lot to do with it also. A FWD Prius would probably do the same 0-60 time as it does today as it sat and spun the front tires for 6 seconds before moving.

I am still amazed there is really no competition for them...

I'm curious about what the future holds for their EV competition. Like, the upcoming Bolt is really the only competitor, and even then to the unreleased Tesla Model 3 due to the 200-mile range. Plus, the current Ludicrous model is an actual usable daily driver car. There are faster cars out there, like the Zombie 222, but with a 50-mile range, it's not really as practical as a Tesla with a 300-mile range. And there are crazy fast ones like the 2000+ HP Red Victor 3 that can do zero to 60 in a second, so it will be interesting to see how far Tesla pushes it while also keeping it as a commuter car, instead of a specialized monster. Note that the Red Victor 3 gets 5 miles to the gallon :D

You forgot your number: 1888immoron

He has a point though - electric cars are still big and heavy due to the battery packs.

If Tesla could make a miata fighter though? Holy hell that would be something.

Give something max torque at 0rpm and AWD and of course it will launch like a bat out of hell.

The S is impressive, but it is still a luxury car that goes stupidly fast (same vein as an Audi S8, BMW 750, S55 AMG, etc). They are not sports cars.
