Terrorist Websites

I always here mention of Terrorist websites on the news, like "A video released on the allah snahkbar website shows hostage being executed". I, personally, have never visited one of these sites and I don't know the first thing about hacking. For those of you with knowledge of this sorta thing, what information could a goverment, or private individual for that matter, gather about the identities of those who maintain and contribute (videos of executions, roadside bombs, and/or random acts of violence against Coalition soldiers) on the websites in question? This is something that I've been pondering for a few days now.
