I don't think it is significant to the average american, but it is VERY significant for the government. If the US gets hit by another terrorist attack, people can't point fingers at the government and say "Hey! WTF! You guys knew about it all along and didn't tell us." Therefore, the system is really just to save the government's credibility in the event of more terrorist attacks.

They don't mean anything to me personally, but I don't necessarily think it's a waste of time and money.

Did the Bush Administration come up with the idea? If they did, then the system is definitely worthless.

No terrorist attacks are going to immediately affect this place - we live in the isolated hills/mountains of Northern Arkansas.

I think its a powerful tool for communication between the government and the people but for me right now it doesn't mean much to me.

I live in NYC and all the alerts mean to me is a change in the number of black helicopters I see out the window during work and an indication of whether certain subway platforms near the downtown area will actually be crowded from the number of police officers standing around bored out of their minds and ready to ticket people for sitting on a bench or other such nonsense, while the majority of others have none.

As far as actual terror risk I think the alerts mean nothing.

Are we supposed to do anything when they raise the alert level? Like barracade our doors or something?

They mean NOTHING and i commute to Manhattan everyday.... Like glugglug said... just more cops in the big subway stations and more choppers.

I always figure the alert crap would warn a terrorist when not to go blow something up lol.
