I assume that was an instructor in the passenger seat? He should kept his wits about him.

What exactly did he do to indicate to you that he did not have his wits about him? The fact that he had the presence of mind to tell the driver to turn the ignition off after the crash? What would you have done?

wasn't even a real viper, it was race modified.

Not THAT modified, it still had airbags.

it was modified to at least scca specs maybe further. An everyday viper, those guys wouldn't have just unbuckled and gotten out.

Don't be so sure. I don't see a rollcage - not across the top of the windshield, and not across the dash. Hell, that thing even still has a radio in it. The fact that there was an instructor in the car means it may very well have been just a school car, or club event. For a lot of club events the only modification you need to make to the car are belts and racing brake pads (ironically enough). Usually for SCCA events (which is actual racing) the interiors are gutted, including the airbags - ours are (Spec Miata). And, I was once flagging for a club event - COMSCC, and I saw a guy in a Volvo go by with his brakes on FIRE - we had to black flag him. He decided to go out with the stock brake pads on.

Damn that sucks. I would have at least tried to downshift out of it. Cooking the clutch is better than wrecking the car.
