I don't agree with most of you guys. If this guy is a liability to the OP's firm, then he should be let go. Management doesn't always know what's going on, co-workers typically know more. If it takes the OP to bring up issues to get this guy canned, then so be it.

Sorry, but I would hate to have you as a coworker.

If youre the type that wants to blame others for your own mistakes, then yes.

You would hate me as a coworker.

If this guy would man up and take responsibility for it and say "I'll fix it, I'll take care of it" without trying to blame everyone but himself, for his database....He wouldn't be in the position.

not sure what is worse. someone that blames others or one that thinks they are management and sabotages othes work. i hope you get caught doing it and get fired.

What are you talking about? Instead of owning up, the coworker tried blaming everyone and their unborn children for something he is responsible for. Whether or not he was at fault for the data loss, he was at fault for the lack of data recovery. The OP never mentioned anything about sabotaging the guy's work.

"I want to get him fired. I would have a completely clear conscious in subverting this guy and getting him thrown out on his fat, worthless ass and hiring someone who's an asset to the firm, not a liability.

I need a course of action, though."

sure looks like thats what he was thinking.

i'll tell ya how that looks. looks like you don't deserve an open-casket funeral. you must think i'm pretty goddamn stupid, don't you? i must be, for hiring such a worthless sack of shit like you in the first place. now clean out your desk and walk out the front door, or i'll throw you off the fucking roof.

that's if i were the manager.

exactly.

Why don't you talk to the coworker about getting his shit together to make his, and the company's future more secure. I'm currently unemployed, and have wanted to get into an IT position, but I've been seriously questioning that desire. I don't know if I can take the petty bullshit that goes on in an office environment, and worthless piss ants trying to further their careers at the expense of others :^S

Both of your jobs are to help make the company successful. I suggest you work with your coworker towards that goal.

I suppose if i wanted to delete data I could have.
I probably would have been caught.

I wouldn't have asked for advice on that.

I didn't need ATOTs suggestions to come up w/ such a "foolproof plan", such as that...

If I couldn't get this guy fired for not doing his job before (not backing up our server),
I guess I need to accept the fact i'm probably not going to get him fired for screaming at the top of lungs at the boss, being worthless and allowing thousands of records to be deleted from a db.

You think?

it tells me, that he deleted the records without authorization...

which is what my boss accused him of, to which he tried to blame anyone but himself for it, when that didn't work he attempted to feign ignorance of the records being deleted.

This guy's ego is so wrapped up in computers for him to feign ignorance on anything related to a DB or computers, is just so completely out of character and quite frankly suspicious as hell.

He's worthless and lazy, but he's not stupid. He just never accepts blame for anything, including not backing up the server. I can't remember what his excuse for that was, even though there is none.

Run your own backups, regularly.

The next time this happens, give the backup to your boss, fix the issue. That would be the right thing to do. (don't tell the coworker you're running backups, otherwise you become the scapegoat the next time stuff goes missing and you don't have a most recent copy)

If the database backup's have been done properly, that data could be restored pretty easily. Restore to point in time FTW!!

G,

Let it go. It's hard working with people like that, but it makes your life and your job harder if you let it become a point of contention. You do your job and that's it. If he fucks up he fucks up and eventually he gets the can because he's going to make a mistake again if he's as you say he is. Let management do their part, you do yours and try your best to worry only about your job. Worry about other people only leads to your misery.

I do not understand this answer...wtf is wrong with you guys...you act like you never worked with an incompetent fuck before that failed in his/her ability to do their work and therefore creates more stress on other employees, creates an atmosphere if disdain and is a waste of company resources and wastes money..........it's pretty simple.......do your fucking job there's no problem.

Now OP...IF your side is accurate and I am willing to bet there is a little wiggle room in there.....the three things that will save your ass every time is documentation, documentation, documentation.

document your co-workers incompetence on any number of things over a period of time (3-6 mos.), take it upon yourself to covertly find out how the information was deleted and take all that to the boss and let him know that he "might" want to investigate...let the chips fall where they may and deal with it.

I would say just CYA and let things happen naturally. You are a real douche for wanting to actively get someone fired. Work with said employee. If he wants to save his job, he will do just about anything. It is your duty to work constructively with your peers no matter what you think of them.

A coworker in a small office's main job is managing databases. Well, one of his databases has had thousands of records get deleted from it. He claims he didn't do it, had nothing to do with it. Despite the fact, its his database. Who or why is irrelevant. What he fails to see is the blame lies solely with him.

So, of course my boss is livid over these records getting deleted.

They had it out on Tues. I could hear everything. Boss is chewing him out, questioning how this happened, etc etc.

He keeps claiming and whining that "he didn't do it, i didn't do it, i don't know"
blaming everyone else he can (he tried blaming me, as well) for his fuck up.

Boss keeps chewing him out, finally he SCREAMS at the top of his lungs, at the boss, I DIDN'T DO IT!!!!!

Boss goes through the roof. GIVE ME YOUR FUCKING KEYS MOTHERFUCKER, YOURE HISTORY, GTFO, DON'T YOU EVER YELL AT ME LIKE THAT. Boss was a Sgt. in the Army and knows how to scream and cuss....

So, of course, coworker immediately gets meek and shaky voiced and whiny, "I'm sorry I'm sorry, whine whine whine...blah blah blah"....

Well, he manages to weasel around and didn't ever leave and talked his way out of it. So, boss says "finish this and we're going to discuss your future at this firm"

So, boss comes and asks me to describe everything that this guy assists me with. Which isn't much. He set up the exchange server & the file server. Things I can learn how to do. We're a small firm. That is not a full-time job. Things we can just contract out. Nothing came out of this conversation, so far.

I tried making a power play a few months back after it was found out he wasn't backing up our server. Unfortunately over the years, he's convinced & manipulated my boss into thinking he's irreplaceable. When, in fact he's quite replaceable. I'd put good money on the fact that we can find another fat, know-it-all, greasy haired IT/Database guy that actually is competent in his job, in a heartbeat in this economy...

I've been here nearly 3 years, and this is about 4th time this guy's done something deserving of termination.

Unfortunately as more time passes from the screaming fight, the chances of him getting shit-canned diminish. I feel like the window is closing.

I want to get him fired. I would have a completely clear conscious in subverting this guy and getting him thrown out on his fat, worthless ass and hiring someone who's an asset to the firm, not a liability.

I need a course of action, though.

if the guy did not delete the records, then find and blame the moron who did.
that the guy did not perform proper backups is his fault.

either way, you do not supervise the guy or the guy who deleted the records... STOP WASTING YOUR OWN FUCKING TIME WORRYING ABOUT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IN THE COMPANY IS DOING...

he should be able to find out what ID if it wasn't him... or he's just really incompetent. If it's a shared ID, then he's still incompetent.

I'll take that bet if you're up for it. I disagree. The "smart guy" tech area is in high demand.
