I setup Terminal Services on a Windows 2003 server that has 10 CALs with 7 WinXP Pro computers locally connected to it.

What licenses, if any, do I need to legally connect to my TS server.

Thanks

How did you setup your TS? Is is an application server or administrative?

You'll need to decide which licenses are most beneficial for your situation. I assume you could use either client licenses or device licenses with the setup that you described. I've never bought or installed device licenses, so I'm not 100% sure how they work. Client licenses, OTOH, will let any client connect to a session as long as there is still a license available. IOW, if you have 7 clients XP clients that need to connect to the server, all you would at the most is 7 client access licenses, assuming everyone will be connected at the same time.

There is no TS in administration mode under server 2003; that was a server 2000 option. Now you have remote desktop for administration (enabled by right-clicking on my computer) and terminal services (formally application server mode).

Besides I would hope it's not in administrative mode; you cant connect 7 clients in administrative mode (only 5) and all of them must have administrative privilages over the server in order to connect.

I'm sorry, I have it setup in Application mode.

I understand about the licenses for the applications but as for the Microsoft licenses, do I need seperate TS CALs or am I ok since I have already bought the necessary Windows 2003 Server CALs and Windows XP Pro are on all clients computers?

From what I read, you only need the TS CALs if you have OSs that are below Windows 2000.

Thanks for your replies.

With Win 2003 Server, you need a Terminal Services CAL for EACH machine that logs on.

WinXP USED to get Terminal Services CALS for > Win2003 Server.

MS has changed the way licensing works for TS several times.
