Im taking a Psychoanalytic Comparative Liturature class. For our 2nd term paper we could choose from several topics or questions. I chose this one: Give a psychoanalytic interpretation of how your favorite TV show keeps you coming back for more. I chose to write it on Friends. I would like to get other people's opinions/ideas who liked Friends and why you liked the show.

Most people to hang out with a group of friends and that was what the show was based on. We as the audience draw similarities with real life and I think it was a show that had characters that some of us can relate with. And it was just plain funny :)

I watch Friends so I can talk about it with my friends and not feel left out. Okay, not really ;)

It's not my favorite show, but it has some comedic moments. Joey's facial expressions and reactions are just hilarious, and there was the whole Ross-Rachel thing was okay a few seasons back, before it got annoying.

Edit: I agree with InstincT in that there was someone on the show that everyone could relate to. The character development was decent.

I wish I had the know-how to create a site that would list recently created threads and allow users to guess which post # will contain the first thread crap.

Of course, the users would be forbidden from fulfilling their own prediciton.

Anyway, carry on. ;)

i think once you watch the first coupel of years it becomes a habit.

like you just associate with these characters (IMO) and when you watch reruns (which are in fact more popular than the new episodes) you can think back in your life to where you were at that moment in time.

so many e.g.'s

like the older episodes showed the twin towers, and you're like wow, this is an older episode.
or when ross and rachel get back together at some point i was a sophomore in college,
or when the show started i know where i was and how i heard of them.

just brings back memories and the such

I don't know if you want/need this kind of input, but I can tell you why after watching 10 or 12 episodes, it made me hate the show.

It did the opposite of what you're writing your paper about.

As someone who hated the show, perhaps my dislike will spark your reasons for enjoyment:

1. The show was blatantly unrealistic, and almost nauseatingly so. These 30-somethings had absolutely nothing to do in their lives but crack corny, cheeseball jokes and engage in middle school humor.
2. The show was very, very "white". The humor involved prissy girls acting spoiled, as only could be seen in the local mall. "Cute" backstabbing which got resolved in a "cute" way. Girls getting worke dup over the most frivolous things - I was expecting an "boohoo, my BMW could a mud splotch this morning!" with Hahahah canned laughter in the background. Guys who were complete dorks, were seen as something of attraction, again because of their "cute" antics. Before you piss down my throat, go read about the people who love this show because they could "relate" to it. If you could relate to that campy, precocious humor, you probably grew up in a household resembling those in commercials for various household cleaning products.
3. Phoebe was the most tired role I've ever seen. It's amazing how Lisa Kudrow's entire acting style is just a rehash of Terri Garr's. Go watch a few things she's done, and you'll see the same exact role, played out the same exact way, just 20 years prior.

The only show possibly more annoying was Mad About You.

EDIT: Schwimmer "the whining moron" and Joey "If a goombah and a Jerry's Kid had children" are so incredibly annoying I cannot FATHOM how Joey is having his own show, and how people can "relate" to them.
