"Tenure prevents firing a teacher" : myth

I think a lot of jobs would/could fire you for what you do in your personal time, assuming it it publicized and could reflect negatively on you/your company.

that seems pretty unfair
if those are all the facts i hope he sues and wins, thats pretty stupid that simply not having a shirt on in a pool and appearing on TV will get you fired

Well technically it seems like it does, because they rescinded his tenure before making him resign according to the article.

A lot of people believe that tenure protects teachers from being fired.

Fair? Unfair?

And, you're held to a higher community standard in NY - what you do on your *personal* time can affect your employment.

I think that's a bit of a strawman, I've never suggested or thought that a tenured teacher couldn't be fired.

I do have the impression (not by direct experience, so I could be wrong) that tenure can make it difficult to get rid of poor-performing teachers.

Anubiliar. :colbert:

A Long Island middle school teacher says he was forced to resign after he appeared on TV as a reality show extra in an episode where he peels off his shirt and frolics with women in a swimming pool.

My wife was looking into the school's side of it - the show appears to be pretty trashy; I presume Jersey Shore style of trashy.

But, had tenure, 1 week later, unemployed. Regardless of whether he wins his lawsuit or not, this demonstrates that in many cases, it's pretty easy to dismiss a teacher.

To an extent, I agree with the low-performing teacher brought up a few posts above. Though, with new regulations, that's been addressed. Teachers are evaluated on their effectiveness every year. Though, that process itself is quite flawed (but it's a start.) 2 ineffective years in a row & it can spell bad things for the teacher.

So the gist of it all is that tenured teachers can't be let go for poor performance but for going on TV and chasing women around shirtless.

Since when do public school districts give tenure? My wife's a teacher. None of the local districts have tenure. I don't think I really agree with tenure for non-research positions, which rules out anything but senior college professors.

I think its BS that anything done in your personal life... (provided its not illegal) ... to affect your employment.

This.

But why the fvck non-college teaching positions needs tenure anyway in the first place. So they can't get fired from teaching creation science?

In California it is almost impossible. California requires a panel of 3 people to agree to fire the teacher. One problem, one of the three members gets to be hand selected by the teacher them self. The teacher can select a close friend, who will just reject the firing. That means the remaining two must both agree to fire them.

So his appearance constitutes promotion of the show, and thereby its "drinking and fighting" are reflected on him even if he participated in neither. Fascinating...

It could be portrayed as "Guy takes his shirt off on TV, gets fired".
But there's more to it than that.

Scenarios:

1. He had a powerful enemy that used this as an opportunity to lodge a complaint against him

2. Some staff member's wife made a comment about his abs, causing them to get jealous and lodge a complaint

3. A male staff member found himself erect after he took his shirt off. He was extremely embarrassed and ashamed of himself, and blamed the teacher for his repressed bi-curiousness. He then lodged a complaint.
