Tennessee Tea Parties demand textbooks contain no mean things about Founding Fathers

"The material calls for lawmakers to amend state laws governing school curriculums, and for textbook selection criteria to say that “No portrayal of minority experience in the history which actually occurred shall obscure the experience or contributions of the Founding Fathers, or the majority of citizens, including those who reached positions of leadership.""

"Fayette County attorney Hal Rounds, the group's lead spokesman during the news conference, said the group wants to address "an awful lot of made-up criticism about, for instance, the founders intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another.""

So, these people think it is necessary to portray rich, white, Christian men as flawless and of such high stature that the presentation their magnificent accomplishments would be diminished by including any information about people outside of their group?

The Onion can't make up crap this crazy.

Just another example of people who can't stand facts that don't extol the virtues of their personal beliefs.

Seems to be a call for government mind control and indoctrination of the children.

What's next? A requirement that every home have a 2'x3' picture of George Washington hanging in a prominent place?

Revisionism FTL. Sure, sometimes different groups are studied more than they had an effect on large scale historical trends, but this is NOT the solution to that. History, including its important figures, is dirty, complicated, and interesting. Whitewashing them only serves to make history not only inaccurate, but boring to no end to high school students.

Our school books are not white washed enough now? Don't want the children to know what a rude and roudy bunch of bastards the founding fathers were? Color me not surprised.

What's next, liberals wanting to stop conservtives from saying mean things about other liberals?

I agree, bad idea. Now, Woodrow Wilson being a KKK lover and FDR creating social programs that disfavored blacks, that's stuff that needs to stay buried.

All I know is that I would not be a responsible parent or citizen if the tea baggers are allowed to write the text books that dumb out children down.

What we need is an honest history and not some politically correct version of some perverted charade of what politically correct should be from a bunch of nuts.

The fact is and remains, our founding fathers were a collection of men who politically differed with each other, they fought like cats and dogs, but somehow they were able to come together, and produce our constitution as a document much greater than themselves. Our children need to understand, if our founding fathers can do it, they can extend our constitution into future also.

first off, edit the title. There are multiple TEA party groups in Tennessee... this idea came from a group of about 60 people. Hal Rounds being the spokesperson.

Anyway because one loony person says this stuff into a mic does not mean the national GOP or even the Tennessee's GOP party would even consider this.

I bet that any history lessons that are taught do not go anywhere in detail enough to even cover this stuff. Too much concentration on national tests. The odds of this even being presented to the State legislature are about 542,345,298 to 1. The odds of this change being made in Tennessee's curriculum... about 876,345,345,786 to 1.

But hey a good thread to keep attention away from the jobless claims report showing a 10 week high number of claims.

Excellent point. I mean when is that Republican-led House going to fix the friggin' economy already?
Let's cut our way to higher employment! Let's start today!

right on. i heard all of last year that the corporations are not hiring because they are worried that their taxes will go up.. now that the tax cuts are staying for 2 yrs.. show me jobs.. man i was hoping unemployment will be around 7% right now after the tax deal.. i am disappointed

That's really retarded. The stories of blacks and native americans are a core part of early American history. (I'm all for stopping people from trying to force in stories of latinos though... not really relevant to early American history.)

Edit the title? The group that presented their demands represented several tea party organizations. I have heard of no dissent among their ranks. The guy who presented the demands was the spokesperson for the collective group, not just his own.

No, ignoramus, 95% of what's said here about liberals is wrong or lies, I can't remember the other 5%.

Liberals are for the truth being told, INCLUDING the mistakes of their side, you are projecting your own flaws.

Woodrow Wilson was a terrible racist as I understand it (in contrast, Republican Teddy Roosevelt made a point to invite a black man as a visitor to the White House).
