When does one need to go see a doctor? Sometimes during a workout, when there's little background noise, I can hear and feel some slight popping in my left elbow near full extension, always at the same angle (approx). It's painless.

Within reason, creaking/popping noises from your joints are usually nothing to worry about so long as there is no pain associated with it. Tissues within the joints make noise as they move over each other and gasses can build up and make noise when released. If you aren't seeing any negative effects from this - such as pain or reduce ROM - then you can safely ignore it.

chiropractor or physical therapist... ideally would be going to a chiropractor who offers physical therapy in his office (there are plenty of them out there).

I'm not trying to be an ass but... Is there anything a chiropractor can't cure? I mean I've got a friend with AIDS, I was thinking about sending him to the chiropractor to see if they could help...

Typically a physical therapist would say that there's no need to worry since the popping is asymptomatic. And, although I respect the chiropractic field, elbows is not exactly something that is well trained in the schooling. It seems that's why PTs were bred.

OP - if it doesn't hurt, don't worry. If it starts to affect your strength or actually starts to become painful, then you should visit your general practitioner and get an evaluation by either an orthopedist or physical therapist.

lol

my point of view is that chiropractors can't cure things. we fix abnormalities in nerve function and/or biomechanics. since your nerves control your body and biomechanics dictates alignment and motion, chiropractors can help tons of issues people have. most people don't realize that and think that all we do is deal with back pain.

unlike medical doctors, we don't have a pill to mask symptoms of problems. we have our hands to adjust the problem to try and get things working back to the way it should.

I've made this suggestion to you in ATHF before.

If you are going to suggest chiropractic for something that traditionally is not associated with chiropractic, your cause will be much better served if you explain yourself.

Rather than saying "go to a chiropractor for your elbow popping", followed by "we fix nerves/biomechanics rather than masking symptoms" (ps many pills fix problems too), perhaps actually explain what a chiropractor will do for your popping elbow, how it will help, and why it is a superior choice to just going to a physical therapist.

Why is it all the times I've suggested this to you, you disappear from the thread?

i thought you were just making a statement/suggestion. you didn't ask me to do anything. my apologies.

many chiropractors don't just work on the spine. they work on every joint. in working on every joint, they also work on rehabbing muscles and stripping out contractures. there are myofascial planes that go down your arm/forearm that can cause biomechanical issues if there are contractures or adhesions within the complexes in the kinematic chain. once you work on the joint, realign it, and then work with the muscles on a regular basis, they can pretty much retrain the muscles to keep it from doing that.

however, that's granted that there's something wrong. there might not be anything wrong at all. typically, a snapping/popping that occurs in a joint like the elbow is just tendons stapping them selves over bony prominences. it won't really hurt. however, it's my belief that something like that can either be normal for them or it could be a biomechanical issue. if it's a biomechanical issue, it could lead to some early osteoarthritis in the future. so, that's why i said have a reputable chiropractor or physical therapist look at it.
