if Jack Black had never become a famous comedian/actor/cartoon Panda, would his music via Tenacious D have become well known? i mean, is it really good?

or do other people always picture a Panda bear and a bald guy when they watch Tenacious D perform music?

*edit* i kind of like it, i don't hate their music, just wondering if people like it *more*, probably subconsciously, due to his acting ability/funnyness

I don't know, I don't think its terrible. There are much worse bands out there IMO. But I guess I see your point, he probably never would have made it out of the bar gig scene.

I know of some people that have gone to one of their concerts. They're apparently not too bad.

Jack Black is actually a competent singer, which I was surprised at. I do enjoy Tenacious D. Also their movie was great.

Nope, but then again that's the business. Without famous parents we'd likely never have been blessed by:

Willow Smith
Jaden Smith
Kate Hudson
Liza Minelli
the Kardashians
Paris Hilton
Miley Cyrus
Rumer Willis
Brody Jenner
Angelina Jolie
Kiefer Sutherland
Liv Tyler
Charlie Sheen
Gwyneth Paltrow
Ben Stiller
Jeff Bridges
Beau Bridges
Carrie Fisher
Jamie Lee Curtis
Mariska Hargitay
Emilio Estevez
Michael Douglas
Sean Astin
Drew Barrymore
Jane Fonda

and many more

I don't think so. I like their music but they feel like a bar band, which I honestly hate to say because they seem like cool guys.

I like Jack Black's music attitude/presence though. From the movie and their game (forget the name), he gives off a post-apocalyptic/rock god feel, IMO. Unfortunately, mainstream music would say otherwise.

I thought your post seemed weird so I decided to check Wikipedia. As far as I can tell, Tenacious D and Jack Black (as an actor) both started to become popular at about the same time. Their first album was released in 2001 and Jack Black's first lead role (in Shallow Hal) was also in 2001. It certainly helped that Black had already done some acting and had some friends in good places, which helped promote the band, which allowed them to release their album, and so on and so forth.

By the time Kung Fu Panda came out Jack Black was already an established actor and Tenacious D had already released two albums and had a full-length movie.

So no, I don't think of a panda when I hear a Tenacious D song, because I first heard their music when I was in high school, long before Kung Fu Panda.

I can't stand Jack Black and Tenacious D sucks.

Thankfully Black managed to not ruin Tropic Thunder at least.

right
for me, i didn't know about it until much later

i think it probably stands on its own, at least as much or more to comparable situations

like Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band

Yeah, because of their looks they'd be stuck in bars or doing weddings. But he is a decent singer. He sung Lets Get it On in High Fidelity really well...he's pretty versatile. I wouldnt mind seeing a Wedding Singer like movie with Tenacious D.

you got a bit of that in School of Rock, i liked that. maybe they can do a School of Rock 2 with the same actors :whiste:

School of Rock was awesome, but I meant doing the whole wedding singer thing. I like Sandler's Wedding Singer, but I think Tenacious D would be better. Jack Black does intense, passionate, yet absurd, very well. Kinda what you would think a career wedding singer would be like.
