There was a funny fellow on various forums who was so discombobulated by the Core 2 range, that he was vigorously stating that he felt the $186 Core 2 was responsible for the Global Financial Crisis which occurred in 2008/9. o_O

I dunno, but the funniest part that period was how people are willing to spend $200+ on used obsolete S939 A64 X2s when a whole new setup of 45nm Pentium OCed to 3.73GHz + G41 mobo + 2GB DDR2/3 that lay waste to any A64 can be had for less.

I don't think anyone was buying s939 in 2008-2009
AM2 was very quickly pretty cheap, DDR2 was cheap, finding DDR1 (1GB) was not so easy.

also keep in mind Intel kept Pentium D on the low end, and the 945 chipset for like another year, until they released the e2200 (those were difficult to OC to around 2.7-3GHz with cheap boards, they required better boards because of how the ram dividier/fsb worked on most cheap boards) series and G31...

AMD had big price drops for the X2s in 2006/2007 because of how strong the C2D was, and IMO had a lot better cheap chipsets to offer, so it made sense to buy AM2 for a cheap dual core for some time.

Yeah, that never happened. I built my X2 in 2006 when it had been released in 2005. It was a simple drop in for me. In '09 I made the leap to an i7 920. Got it for $200 at Microcenter.

I can't believe yall don't remember that. I very clearly remember s939 dual cores going for absurdly high prices on ebay for a brief while where it would still be more expensive to build new. I remember seeing $200 or more even

The top end 939 FX60 still goes for over $100 on ebay, but I think that's more of a collectible thing.
