Tempur-Pedic or Sleep Number?

Well it's Christmas, and my parents have agreed to get me a nice mattress (to replace the 15 year old one that I've had since I was 6). So I'm looking at the low-mid end models of the sleep number (3000-5000) and the tempur-pedic (original or advantage).

Size I'm looking for is a twin long, so I can't go much higher anyway. Personally I like a firm mattress with minimal padding (I'm right at home on the dorm mattress with an egg carton pad). As to why I don't just buy a dorm mattress with an egg carton pad, I know there are better things out there and I want it to last.

All of the reviews Google has turned up have been pretty binary, and in the case of the sleep number mostly negative. However I have 3 relatives that swear by the sleep number, so I'll take their word. No one I know uses tempur-pedic.

Anyone here have any experience with either?

sleep number sucks. gimick.
tempur-pedic sucks, too. it feels like sleeping in clay. it's very weird and doesn't breath well. ignore adul.

look at latex mattresses. they feel like a conventional spring mattress but are incredible. I have a stearns and foster from the oasis collection that is insane. the only downfall of latex matresses is they weigh about 5x that of a regular mattress.
there are some really nice latex ones, and they sleep really well, and don't wear out or sag like conventional.
they are great for other activities.
i would have never slept on one or had heard of them til i was at a store that had a king in their clearence for 800$, normally 3000$, so i had to give it a try. never gonna sleep on anything else again.

btw, hey adul!!!! been a long time, how have you been???

I slept on a Sleep Number at a Radisson a couple of nights and I absolutely hated it. It just seems to be a glorified air mattress which I just couldn't get comfortable on. It was either stiff as a board or sloppy soft.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll check out the latex mattresses. Worst case scenario I can try one of each for a month or so. :)

I have a tempur-pedic rhapsody bed that I've been sleeping on about 6 months now. I really like the bed. I am a pretty big guy, and the rhapsody is the firmest model of tempur bed. After a few months the bed broke in to be pretty soft while still giving good support.

I looked at latex mattresses. There are a lot of offerings out there, so be sure and do your research and buy a good brand. I've heard good things, but I also hear that the latex doesn't breathe real well. I went with tempur over latex due to the brand name and the fact that tempur stands by their products with a great warrantee.

I hear sleep number best for two people who like different firmnesses. Otherwise there really isn't a pont. Which brings me to the question of why you are buying a twin long?!? If you are in your early twenties and have moved out (or are moving out) of your parents home, I would think that you would want at least a full if not a queen, for entertaining "guests", you know. If you are going to get a nice bed, get one you can grow into.

Foam mattress all the way. I've tried out a Sleep Number and actually found it to be somewhat uncomfortable. The foam beds like the Temper-pedic feel perfect...I really enjoy sleeping on my foam mattress. I had a Pillowtop before (which I loved), but I'll never go back - imo foam is the #1 best option. I sleep like a baby!

Do you live in or near the New England area? There's a furniture chain (with annoying ads) called Bob's Discount Furniture that sells a Temper-pedic knockoff called the "Bob-o-pedic". It's 2" thicker and it's awesome...we got one either this year or last year and I sleep sooooo much better. Haven't had a single problem with it. Very, very comfortable, doesn't get hot like some people said foam would, doesn't keep any dents like I feared it would, just all around great.

My friend's wife has back problems and they have a Sleep Number and really like it. I've used it when housesitting for them and I did not care for it at all...I found the adjustment stuff uncomfortable to lay on, it almost felt like sleeping on a cheap inflatable matress with bedding inside. But it seems to work for them.

I'm 21 and still in college, likely to be that way for another 3 years. I live in the dorms for now. This bed will be at my/my parents' house, and will probably move with me when I get an apartment/graduate. As for "guests", well, from what experience I have I've found that a twin long can accommodate 2 regular-sized people pretty well (on a short-term basis), they're also cheaper and give me more space, but I suppose I might as well entertain the notion of a full bed. It's my parents' money going into this after all. :)

Latex all the way assuming they are in the price range you can spend. I just got a new mattress about 2 months ago, the latex in most stores were about 1500, Ikea does have one for less. I didnt go check out the Ikea one but loved all the latex I tested, I just wasnt going to spend 1500, so I spent 1k on a Simmons World Class that has a latex pillowtop. I have been using latex pillows since I was a kid and not only do they rock for comfort they last 15-20 years. I got a queen size you a twin will be less of course.

It was made by these folks, but I got it from the same place as my mattress. Shop around they can be found for as low as 20 bucks. Just search for Talalay Latex Pillows, if you are in Socal Sit N Sleep sells them and so does Custom Comfort Mattress Company. Online Overstock.com has some also, but not sure who makes the ones for them.

I have a tempur pedic and love it! I have slept on a sleep number at several hotels and did not care for them, was uncomfortable and made my back hurt on every setting, also seemed to much like being on a cheap blow up air mattress. The Tempur Pedic can get warm in the summer but nothing horrible, I am always warm but it doesn't bother me at all on this bed. Hope this helps!

I understand your thought process, but if you are going to spend that much coin on a bed (even if it is your parent's money), I would expect that the bed would last at least 10 years, if not 15 or 20. You are 21 now, where do you see yourself when you are 31? 41? A twin makes since for a kid, but just isn't practical for an adult long term. It won't even do much for you as a guest bed down the line.

I see a lot of cheap foam mattresses now, $500-1000. Anyone have an opinion on these? I am getting rid of a mattress that I only had for 3 years (posturpedic) and its horrible now. Paid $1000 for a full. I tried a $4000 tempurpedic but the room was very cold (was in a cabin which was 40 then 60 at night with heat on but the mattress probably took a long time to warm up) making the mattress stiff so I couldn't get a good impression (no pun intended).

Do the mattress vendors allow you to return it even if you don't like it? I know tempurpedic says they do but I don't want to spend $3000+. i also heard a lot of the places that say they have a satisfaction guarantee make all kinds of excuses not to refund the mattress and you have to pay a lot for shipping and handling. So i was kinda thinking of getting a sub $1000 mattress I dont mind tossing in a few years, not a 10 year investment. Besides if I get engaged and girlfriend moves in then I would buy a queen or king.
