Hey guys, just got my new computer yesterday and although i know what temps to expect after OCing (from these forums), what im at now seems kinda hot to me stock.... dont wanna fry my chip the frist freaking time i try to OC!

My setup:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
Asus CPU Cooler Silent Square Pro Extremely Cool
2048 MB DDR II 800 Memory (OCZ Reaper)
eVGA 680i LT SLI
Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM
BFG 8800 GTX OCE 768 MB GDDR3
NZXT Hush Case
Power Supply 700 Watt Thermaltake Tough Power Extreme

My Temps (just sitting on the desktop, no programs ect. running)
Processor Temperature: 38
Core 1 - 44
Core 2 - 44
Core 3 - 42
Core 4 - 43
GPU - 65
* No idea why it gives me a "processor temp" of less than the 4 cores averaged, and these readings are all in celsius from PC Wizard 2008 program

So ya... is that hot for stock speed? The room its in is at 22 degrees, stock voltage on CPu of 1.17 and i got the chasis fan at 5k rpm

Those temps seem very high. I have an ASUS P5K-E which reports temps way too low but at stock speeds, Speedfan reports core temps in the low to mid 20s and the processor temp around 28. Even if it is 10 degrees off, I am idling at 35 degrees at most.

I am not sure why the ASUS board is so off on the low side and maybe your mb errs by reporting higher temps.

43-44 for idle don't seem to be out of the ordinary. Look at these 2 reviews, this might be a little confusing though. As can be seen here, a x6800 idles at 31c on intel's stock cooler, which is at 3ghz. http://www.anandtech.com/casec...howdoc.aspx?i=3113&p=5

Here is the weird thing, in a different review, the intel retail HSF keeps the x6800 at 41c at idle. http://www.anandtech.com/casec...howdoc.aspx?i=3068&p=4 typo in the first review ? I think 41c is in fact a normal temp for a q6600 to idle at. Another review ALSO shows the x6800 idling at 41c using the stock cooler. http://www.anandtech.com/casec...howdoc.aspx?i=3022&p=4

The q6600 is of course of a later stepping, but it is 4 cores opposed to the x6800 2 cores, which do run at slightly higher clockspeed. I dunno ...

I think it's 15 degrees off, not 10..

Download Speedfan 4.34 beta. Your actual temps are most likely 15c above the reported temperature. That issue is fixed with the new version.

Well, I can tell you right now that your temperatures are wrong unless you are using TEC.

If the air inside your case is 20c, then your CPU cannot be cooler than 30c on the core, even that would be best case scenario for air cooling. Most people have a case temp of 30-34c in a 22-25cc room temperature and therefore, idle speeds would be about 40c best case scenario.

To the OP, your temps idle are just fine depending on how hot your case is. Ambient temperature determines lowest possible idle for anything that is being cooled with air. You cannot cool the Tcase of the CPU any cooler than the air you are blowing on it, and the cores under the Tcase are 10 - 15 hotter, which is TJunction. So, again, if you have perfect contact with the intel heat spreader, your tcase will be near ambient, and your cores will be 10c+ beyond that. That would be your lowest possible idle temperature with air cooling. This does NOT change if you have a heatsink the size of a six pack, or the latest and great Thermalright cooler. You simply cannot cool an object lower the temperature of the air blowing on it and that object in this case is the Intel Heat Spreader, which covers the cores and has a delta itself 10c+ between it and the cores that it sits over...

Actually, my cores idle at 37-38c with room-temp (~23c) air ported directly to the fan of my Big Typhoon. Measured with both Speedfan & CoreTemp. Case ambient is 30-32c at idle. So it is actually possible to idle lower than 40c.

Alrighty,

So i changed from PCWizard to Speed Fan v4.33 and now my core temps list as:

1) 29
2) 28
3) 27
4) 28

SO that seems much better! I should OC thru the bios right? (not speedfan)

Thanks guys

Ok...I don't think you understood our posts. Speedfan 4.33 UNDER REPORTS core temperatures by 15c. To see an accurate reading, either use CoreTemp or get the beta version of Speedfan 4.34.

Also, you're correct, do not overclock with Speedfan, use BIOS.

Dam, and i was all exicted there.

Ok um some issues here, i tired to download CoreTemp (and the beta) but after unzipping it, i get errors trying to install... same with Speedfan beta 4.34 (although 4.33 worked).

I could install CPU-Z but theres no temp monitor on that...
I am using Vista x64, so i imagine that may be attributing to my install issues?
Anyways, is there any other program i could use? i will try to download and install again, but its not looking 2 good

Ah yes, good ol' Vista. Seems CoreTemp & Speedfan beta don't like it very much. You could try Intel's TAT (search for it, you'll find it),. I think that stands for Thermal Analysis Tool. Anyway, it's hit or miss. Doesn't work with my setup for some reason, but you can give it a try.

Ahh ok thnx im downloading TAT now. Hopefully that works, ill make another thread and see what other vista 64 guys use to monitor

Thanks alot for your fast input though hoki
