Ugh, got called into the bosses office today, as usual... thought it was to discuss the projects I was working on, but I guess not.
I'm a college student... just finished my freshman year at school studying Computer Science. I had a job lined up since March to work the entire summer at a local University, in a department specializing in mapmaking, Global Positioning Systems and Geographic Information Systems. They knew full-well from my resume that I had absolutely no background in GPS/GIS but hired me anyway, saying they believed I'd be a great help with webdesign and copy editing and things of that nature.
Once the job starts they keep trying to give me GPS/GIS-intensive assignments, and I have to keep saying that I don't understand the material. I can DESIGN things for them just fine, but I simply can not create the content for them. While I understand the concepts of the projects they want me to summarize in Sales Advertisements, I can't summarize them at a level which potential customers in the GPS/GIS field would regard as a level of expertise.
Boss said today that "it wasn't working out" and he was sorry, but he didn't want me coming in any more after today. Really irks me, because the work that actually fit in my job description I did fine. I admit that I don't know the material, but I was never supposed to. He says there is a good chance that they'll be able to create a bunch of content within the next few weeks and give to me to design a site around, but not to come back into the office until then... (I'm doubtful it'll even happen, *sigh*)
Now I'm stuck at my desk, finishing out my last day... really worried about what I'm going to do for work. It's summer, so every college and high school student around is looking for a job, and I go back to college in 6 weeks. A lot of employers won't even consider me because I have such a short time to work. Oh well. I'll have to try, won't I?
