Just installed my SLK900U heatsink with a vantec tornado 92mm fan which is blowing onto the heatsink (holy S*it is it loud btw... a lot higher pitched than i thought it would be).. anyhow.. i dont get it.. using arctic silver ceramique.. thin layer of it. Now what i cant understand is.. why is my P4 3ghz still running at 59degrees under load and 50 degrees idle... with the stock heatsink it was 61 under load and 55 idle.. i dont get it.. thats a pretty lame temperature change.. ive been seeing people getting like 40s.. why is mine so high? A

board is an Abit IC7-G.. and i was always told that fin heatsinks perform better with air blowing onto them.. but ill try reversing air flow

switching the way the fan blows increases the temperature under full load from 59 to 64 .. which is worse than with the stock heatsink

at first i was gonna say it is the board but your \case temp is too much

im running 32 case at 100% load for a few hours

my cpu is 40idle/50max

all i can say is add some case fans or try lapping the HS

i think the case temp is so high because this room gets so damn hot for one thing.. like a few degrees cooler than anywhere else in the house.. im kinda nervous about adding case fans as i rather like this case (lian li) and it cost quite a bit ... also.. it has 2 80mm out takes + the PS fan (which also sucks air from right above the cpu into it with another fan) and then 2 80mm intakes in the front..Lian Li PC 60

Thinking on it now, i Don't think the heatsink needs lapping.. when i was getting ready to install it i looked at the base as i wanted to clean it with some alcohol because it had a sticker on it.. it was shiny and i could see myself in it heh

now.. the question is.. once i close the case (if i decide to mount the fan... am i going to see a temperature increase or decrease? 55 is still kinda high no?

they probably do.. but ive still seen people say that they get around 50 under full load with a p4 3ghz and this heatsink.. so i dunno what gives .. and i know the heatsink is on properly and i used the right amount of AS Ceramique... i took the side panel off and actually suspended a 120mm 115CFM fan from the case to see how much it helps.. it helps quite a bit actually.. now im just wondering.. what i should expect to see on my heat if i mount the fan on the side panel and close the case back up

guess you should somehow duct that 120mm onto the heatsink.

the heatsink is actually.. barely even warm... its disipating the heat very well (it also has a 119cfm 92mm tornado on it is why)... i think it had to have been case temp

ur board is prolly reading off more than others...mines at 40idle and i know it should be lower

You've been getting these temps with the side off the case? Do you realize that when you do that, all you cooling scheme flies right out the window, and you're dealing with plain old convection cooling?

Put the side on the case, and let it run for a couple of hours. I'm betting you'll see a difference! Your fans will actually work the way they were designed to!

ill see a difference of the temp jumping up 5 degrees.. ive done as you suggested.. like i said.. the 120mm fan is not mounted in the case yet.. it is actually atm.. hanging from the chassis so i can see how well it cools down.. what i want to know is.. if i cut a hole in the side of my case for it.. install it.. is the temp gonna go down or up? ;p

with a duct straight to the cpu with a fan on each end, maybe it'll go down. feeding the thing fresh air can't be bad.

i did this cardboard duct mod for my slk800 that dropped temps 4c

i use a 92mm and theres overhang on the narrow side of the slk, and the duct gets rid of the deadzone a bit. top of duct is exactly 92x92mm. bottom is 86mmX58mm to match the slk800 and not waste all that air. you could do it too and put a 120mm on your slk900. ordo it in conjunction with a case duct

I'm still guessing your heatsink is not mounted properly. I know it's a pain, but if its barely warm and temps are close to 60C, something isn't right. Your temps should be in the 40s with a HSF like that.

I agree. I have an SLK900U with a 92mm Panaflo L1A, and I idle at 38-40c and max out about 48c. At 48c the SLK is very warm to the touch. Did you mount it onto the stock HSF mounts, or remove that junk and use the mounting solution Thermalright provides via the holes in the mobo? Do the latter, it seems to work much better.

You think his temps will drop with the side panel on? I'd be surprised to see temps DECREASE when putting a side panel on -- I know my system definitely runs cooler with the side panel off.
