You think temperature is bad? You ever watch King of the Hill? Imagine a whole state that talks like Boomhauer. That really does exist.
A whole state? Really? Where?
Parts of Alabama. In some cases, you need a translator to understand these guys. Example:

Does not compute.
I grew up in the south and maybe I just didn't explore into the distant regions enough but I hardly ever heard anyone with an accent and when I did it typically was hardly noticeable. Only in extreme cases would you hear someone with a thick, southern accent. It's just as rare as hearing a really bad northern accent or whatever else you want to compare it to. I grew up in several southern states and have family in several northern states. Mostly everyone sounds exactly the same to me barring the very few words that are pronounced differently.
I now live in CO and no one knows where I'm from since I have zero detectable accent from either region. No one here sounds any different than where I grew up or where my extended family lives. In my experience, the USA has 'dialects' but they aren't what I'd really consider true dialects compared to say USA vs British English.
