Temperature range help

I am not an overclocking expert, but I think my processor is running hot at the stock speed, or perhaps my mb temperature sensor is way off. I have an e6300 at 1.86 stock, an intel D975XBX, and a Zalman CNPS9500. I updated to the latest 1.334 bios, and checked my temps for a while. With the hsf running at 100%, the bios reported 40C idle, and at 50% fan speed, it was 44C. My P4 2.8C with the zalman 7000 (or 7700 I don't remember) idled at about 34C overclocked a tiny bit. I would like to know if you think the sensor may be bad, what the chances are that I got a really crappy proc, and if there are other means to check the temp whether software or physically. Thanks!

Either your HSF isn't seated perfectly, paste hasn't settled, your sensor is slightly off, or it's just fine.

What i'm saying is that i don't think you have anything to worry about...

Well I am concerned that if I overclock it to about 2.4ghz, and under load, that it will reach temps of more than 55C, which I think can become a problem. I will have to try putting the hsf back on again, and maybe not use so much arctic silver 5. I put quite a bit on, and figured extra would squeeze out. I would be happy with it idling at 34C, at stock.

Unless it starts going over 70C, i wouldn't get too worried.

55C isn't gonna hurt anything...well actually, it might cut a couple years off the CPU's life.

So instead of lasting 30 years, it'll last 25

Seems normal, my E6600 is 40 degrees idle, 47 at full CPU load (CPU stress test). I guess these are measured to be a tad hotter since the D975X has a temp. sensor right in the CPU socket, closer than all the other boards before. In any case, these temps are perfectly fine, for me at least.

Just FYI Intel's datasheet says 60C for maximum core temperature.

I wouldn't be comfortable running over 60C full load anyway. 70C is WAY too hot, IMHO.
