Temperature Probe Placement?

I have a Swiftech MC462 heatsink & Enermax Temperature Sensor. How should I mount the Temperature probe to get accurate readings? Best idea I can think of is to cut a slot in the shim & then pass the sensor through there (between the cpu & hs) and place it right on the side of the core (w/ the tip touching the core). Will it fit in there? If not, where else could I put it? on top of the hs (on top of the copper base plate, right over the CPU), but i think that would give very innacurate readings.
