Temperature issues

I just got a new computer together.

Abit Quadgt
P180 case
2x1gb pc2-6400 ballistix
Intel E6400 B2 stepping @ stock speed/volts
Stock heatsink & Ultra90.
Room temp. at around 74F(at 2am) This temp is obviously higher in the day time.

I am having some oddball temps with my system. At stock 2.13ghz and 1.325 volts on the stock heatsink, I have been idle at around 45-48C, load is like 63C or so.

Ok so I figured, well my ultra90 I bought should come in soon. Im thinking the problem most likely is the stock heatsink just blows.

Well the ultra90 has the pushpin mounting just like the stock heatsink, which im sure many are familiar with. I install the Ultra90 with my 120mm fan(zip tied it to the heatsink) and I notice I am still able to twist and turn the heatsink a decent amount. Boot up and sure enough, I am now idling at 57C. The pushpins were definitely down all the way so bleh....

There is a little round concave groove in the middle of the mount. I decided to stick a small wad of paper to help tighten things up. I remount it, and now it is definitely on better. I cant twist and turn the heatsink as much. Well, I boot up and my temps dropped a good amount from the previous 57C idle to about the same as I had before.....at about 47C idle.

Right now I am at 47C idle with my Ultra90 installed. This is virtually the same exact temps as the stock heatsink........... I am confused because it seems like most everyone else has far lower temps and seem to LOAD at around 50C, where as I am IDLE at this temp......... I am definitely rethinking the whole budget heatsink route thing I was planning on doing. I find it hard to believe that the Ultra90 performs the same as the stock heatsink though. I dont think this is the issue.

Do you think buying the bolt thru kit would have any affect on my temps? It seems like this pushpin system isnt the greatest. Any advice would be great. Im kind of baffled right now. My ambiance room temps have always been hotter than the rest of the house(who knows why, but my room always stays warmish). Still though, according to my thermometer it is only 74F in my room right now and im still at 47C(core1) 44C(core2) IDLE.

if you take the side panel off and put a fan blowing in your case will that lower temps? if it does that means you need better airflow in the case. if it does no good then there is something wrong with the mating of the cpu the heatsink. what type of thermal paste are you using?
you can also try to lower your voltage in the bios and see if its still stable at a lower voltage. at 74F you should be getting temps like 40 cpu max at idle. im running my e6700 at 3.6 ghz daily and its only like 32C idle in a 78F room. i have water cooling but you should still see much better temps then what you are getting.
while you have the side panel off try just pushing the heatsink down with your hand to make it have better contact and see if it changes temps any.

you have a problem you just need to find out what the problem is.

I think part of the problem is you are using a 120mm fan on a 90mm heatsink. A good portion of the fan's blade area is not blowing through the heatsink but around it, and the center of the fan gives you no air because of the motor in the center.

Try using a properly-sized fan on it. Also, what thermal compound are you using, and how much?

Yeah I know. Thanks for the info rhino on your room temps. I wanted to find someone with similar room temps and see what cpu temps they have. I am using AS5. Ive now tried remounting my Ultra90 3 different times and applied AS5 in 3 different ways. It hasnt had any effect.

Well, it was clearly a contact issue the first time. I dont know now though. Its on there pretty damn tight now. I dont see how it could be. I remounted the damn thing like 4 times now.

Anyways, I have also been guessing about the fan being the issue. I am using a 120mm fan on the thing. When I bought this heatsink I was hoping it wouldnt be a big issue. Since I dont own a 92mm fan anyways, I wanted to use a 120mm to be more quiet. I suppose Ill have to think about the 92mm.

To be honest, ill probably end up selling the heatsink and going with maybe that Ultima-90(whenever the hell that comes out), or scythe mine or ninja or something.

I as I type this, I am at 50C idle on my damn Ultra90. My room is about 76F. Bleh. That is actually even slightly higher temps than the stock heatsink. I guess my thoughts are it is the 120mm fan doing it. Probably need a 92mm. I find it hard to believe that even if I got a 92mm fan it would lower my temps down 10C though lol.

So much for my budget heatsink idea. :p
