Temperature Differences

When starting my computer from a full shutdown, my cpu temperature will climb and reach 118ºF (48ºC) when idle, and sometimes increases further when I play games. If i reboot the computer the temperature reading drops and remains at 104ºF (40ºC) when idle and only reaches 45ºC when stressed. The reported case temperature remains roughly constant through these situations though, ~25ºC. Does anybody know what this might be a result of?

Yeah, are you getting the temps from a fan speed control display, the BIOS, or a program in Windows?

Also, what's the make and model of your motherboard, some have a history of incorrectly reading the temps, some have fixes for it though.

I originally noticed this using mbm in windows, however, if i boot straight to the bios the same thing happens. I have an abit nf7-s rev. 2 motherboard.

I have an Abit KV8PRO and have the same problem. Most of the time, the guru software says the CPU temperature is about 50C. When i reboot, it will tell me its 30C. If i feel the side of the heatsink, it definatly doesnt feel like 50C, so im inclined to believe the second temp reading. If you go to the Abit website and their forums, alot of people experience the same problem with inaccurate temperatures being reported.

Yeah, some of my older AthlonXP boards I've owned had that problem too. I was never so concerned with it that I did anything about, mostly because the BIOS read it correctly even when the software was misreading it. Best to check the manufacturer's website and see if there's a forum or ask tech support about it. Sometimes a BIOS update'll fix it, but sometimes you're just SOL.
