There is no such number. The temperature of any CPU will vary a lot. You have too many variables to say what is the "normal" temp for a CPU.

Even the idle temp will vary a lot due to differences in heatsinks/thermal compounds/airflow, etc.

What temps are you getting?

I would expect an idle in the 40's and a load in the mid 60's.

Yeah, that's way too hot. Even for a Prescott. Something is wrong somewhere.

zalman CNPS7700-CU fan

with an asus p5 premium motherboard which supposidly reduces it by 10 C it says...how would i go about figuring whats wrong with it?

Well, it could just be a bad reading. Maybe there is a BIOS upgrade that addresses this?

These readings are notoriously unreliable and they vary a lot even with the same board.

It could be an incorrectly installed heatsink, bad thermal compound, poorly applied thermal compound. Maybe not enough air flow?

Have you tried running with the case open and a fan blowing on the mobo to eliminate the airflow question?

How are you getting these temps?

You can also download and run Throttlewatch. If your CPU is really that hot, it will be throttling, and Throttlewatch will let you see that happening.

Stack Cool?
Cooler Overclocking and Quieter Operation!
Heat causes instability and shortens system lifecycle, and motherboard power circuitry is a major thermal source. The patented Stack Cool? technology utilizes a mini PCB stacked against the main PCB to conduct heat away from power components, resulting in a 10° Celsius reduction. And voila! Cooler overclocking, quieter fan operation, greater stability and longer system life without you doing a thing.

even with the 10C less

i have a prescott (although it isn't in use since I purchased an A64 Winchester) and it would idle at 70C and hit as high as 85C while in use. It would also make a high pitched whine when it throttled down at these temps...

The Prescott was using the stock heatsink, so maybe getting a stronger one will help? although the A64 stock heatsink/fan keeps it at 37C idle/45C load even when the A64 is overclocked to 250fsb/2.25...

i have a p4 3.2E in a shuttle pc which should be hott but it's only at 38C idle and goes to 49C at full load. so yoou definatley have got to do something. The max temp a prescott is supposed to get to is 78C then it is at risk of melting or other thermal damage, not to mention poor performance.

I'd try reapplying the thermal paste. also, what kind of fans you have and in what case

I am having simlar issues with my 3.4ghz lga775 prescott. I am using a Thermalright XP-120, with a 120mm 98.3cfm fan, and artic silver 5on an Abit AS8. My temps are getting as high as 75c under full load, and throttling is kicking in. Idles at around 53c. I've got a 120mm intake and 120mm exaust fan, and my system temp is usualy around 35-38c. Also have an 80mm side fan blowing directly at the CPU. I have cleaned an re-applied the artic silver many times, I have tried other thermal compounds, which have given worse results, and this chip will not run under 70c, even underclocked. Seem to have good contact as the base of the heatsink is hot to the touch. With the side of the case open, the cpu temps actualy get worse. My other prescott, a 3.2 engineering sample, never gets higher than 63c, even at 3.6ghz, in the same system, and actualy idles in the low 30's.

With 3 case fans, stock hsf, Pentium 4 540(3.2GHz) gets 33C idle and 45C load. The motherboard is Asus P5GD1-VM.

I'm running a 3.6 at stock speed with a thermaltake silent775 & AS5. I'm getting 45c idle & 60c under load. I haven't checked the temps with the side panel on yet since putting on my new heatsink last weekend. BTW, My 3.6 is an engineering sample my Father got from work (Intel). He just told me tonight some guys at work received pink slips because they sold their "loaner chips" on eBay and the company bought them.

Lucky him, they ran out of 3.6's and my loanar chip was only a 3.2. Yeah, a few people got in a bit of trouble for trying to sell them on e-bay..not entirely sure but probably got fired...
My loaner chip runs plenty cool enough, about 35c at idle, and 60c under load, but the 3.4 retail chip is running way to hot even with the XP-120.

My 3.6 Prescott is also running hot, running at 3.2. I am going to re-apply thermal comp with Acrtic Silver 5. Just loaded throttlewatch so i'll keep an eye on it. Updated BIOS and temp jumped(guess asus fixed temp monitor). MB temp 31C if that helps.

Idle 46-50C
Gaming 75C running WoW

CoGen 6209 Case
3 80mm fans 2 Intake & 1 out
