Hey all...

Well I've been lurking around price grabber, and I can now have a 6600GT in my paws for $220, while the 6800nu has slowly crept from $250 to $275...all of a sudden, the 6800 is borderline outside my budget.

So, from all you 6600GT users out there (I'm getting an AGP, but PCIE is the same for all intents and purposes), what brand do you have? What's your luck with OC'ing?

I don't do a boatload of gaming, but I do enjoy HL2, UT2k4, FarCry and the like, and 2x AA at 1280 keeps the jaggies away just fine for me. My computer is also 1.75 years old, so its starting to choke itself elsewhere besides the graphics card. So, for a moderate gamer, how do you 6600GT owners like your card?

P4 2.53, 533FSB
512 DDR333
Hitachi 5400 60GB
Radeon 9600 Non Pro

I would also like to know since Im considering the purchase of one of these, but you need to change your subject, thats why you are not getting any replys, formulate it as a question regarding brands and success rate.

From the benches I have seen it does not look capable of 1280 with any AA/AF so is overpriced even at MSRP of $199. I won't even pay that on general principles.

Yeah I hear you about the AA difficulties, but if this trend keeps up, it seems that the 6800NU's are gonna come up to their $300MSRP and that means bad times 🙁

We need ATI to release an X800XL AGP toute de suite! I can understand that PCIe was muy important to retain the high volume OEM bidness but everyone and their dog knows there is a glaring hole in the AGP upgrade market and NVIDIA essentially has it to themselves for now. I don't suppose they are gouging though so much as the manufacturers and sellers. Anyhoo, it is just a matter of time for prices to trend down and I have decided not to settle for a 128 bit card like the 6600, nor one with a defective PVP like the 6800.

6600GT almost has the performance of a 6800NU....the only time it falls significantly behind is when AA/AF are applied heartily, and the 128bit memory interface starts to lose steam...

6800NU is really a waste of money...people should either be going for the 6600GT, or if they need the next step up, the 6800GT.

I got my 6800NU for $199 at Fry's a few weeks ago. Maybe at the MSRP of $299, it might be a tad bit pricey, but is by no means a waste of money IMO.

If you are lucky like me 😀 and manage to unlock all 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders, the 6800NU is probably one of the best bang for the buck cards on the market.

Just my .02

I have a eVGA 6800NU that i bought for 285 from newegg.com. Not only did riva tuner 1.52 unlock the 6th vertex and 4 Pipes flawlessly for me, there are reports all over the net about this phenom known as the 6800NU. The 6600GT no doubt is a great card and taking market share from ATI; however, in now way, fashion or form can it compare to a 6800 at the visual levels I game at. It replaced my Powercolor 9700NP if anyone was wondering.

I got a Leadtek Geforce 6600GT and it is a rather big leap from my old Geforce 4200. I don't get very good framerates in 1280*960 with antialias on but my computer is pretty old, a Pentium 4 2100 Ghz. My biggest problem however is that I can't seem to save my TV-out settings correctly. The screen position just doesn't save with the rest of the settings. This is really irritating since I use the TV out quite much. I have always used TV Tool before but it doesn't work on new Geforce cards.

I'm kinda like you, a causual gamer and if you're not too demanding of the games when you play, the 6600 GT is fine. I have the XFX 6600 GT but a lot of people have problems with that brand it seems. I got it specifically because it had dual DVI. I run mine at the 3D default (500/1000) and all the games I've tried run fine provided you seriously don't overdo it. I've run that Chronicles of Riddick, Far Cry, HL2, Battle for Middle Earth, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault and they run fine at 1024x768. I try to keep the texture levels one below the highest level in most cases. My system specs are similar to yours as well.

1GB DDR400

I would tell you to get a brand other than XFX unless you want that dual DVI. I had to RMA one card already because one DVI port didn't work. I would say get a Leadtek or MSI if you don't need 2 DVIs. Money was an issue for me, but if it isn't for you, get the higher end card.

It's true that the 6800 Oc are overpriced but when you get a good deal on it it's worth it 🙂 Bestbuy had them for 279+55HL with a 105 rebate. If you knew a friend who worked at BB you could of had the videocard for about 135 bucks 🙂

well, my wife's EVGA 6800NU AGP runs games better than my MSI 6600GT PCIe, but I heven't had a chance to bench either yet...

My advice would be do your research on HSF's on these cards as not all are created equal! Lesson learned with this MSI of mine which has this big ole HSF which is supposed to cover the RAM's. However, the HSF isn't touching the chips and you can see daylight right thru over the chips!!! it was reaching 70°C in BFV after 15 minutes (as read by Riva Tuner) at stock 500/1000 3D speeds! I applied a little AS5 to the GPU and that brought it down a little (62°C load & 42° idle @ 300/1000 2D settings), but still this HSF is just crap...

bumpity. Just wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this:

Have a Chaintech 6600gt pci-e for my new comp (A8N-SLI Deluxe, AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1gb OCZ EL ram, 300gb 16mb buffer hdd) I got farcry, and when I autodetect settings in game it always sets everything to the lowest possible (even at screen res of 1024x768). When I try the preset "medium", "high","very high" settings the game will still run with good FPS, but everything gets a nice bright yellow shading and stuff in the distance sometimes has no textures....
I don't know what artifacts are, so I can't say if I get any of those...
