Tell me why I should always get the extended warranty on laptops

Should I just go for standard care? or pay an extra $200 (or whatever the amount is, I just made that number up) for an extra years' coverage?

Replacing the motherboard or lcd can cost up to $1000 plus labor. I would always go with a 3 year warranty on a laptop.

Not for as long as you can, but if you laptop comes with a 1 year warranty, I would try to extend it to 3 years.

Remember in a year, your laptop is going to be far behind the current generation. In 3 years, you will want to get rid of it... so 3 years is the max I would go for...

got a 2 year extended warranty for a compaq I bought last august for $99...the warranty was the 3 day express one where they get it back to you in 3 business days

the backlight on the LCD went out last month and I got the laptop back in 3 days. made it worth it right there...

I usually get 2 years extended warranty although at work some of them have 3 years.....it has come in handy more than once.

That way VISA extend the manufacturers warranty for ANOTHER year - FREE.

VISA just paid me $441 to have my Inspiron 4100 repaired (and i sold the POS the next day). It was 11 months out of Mfg's warranty but still covered by Visa. :)

Yes, cause a LCD backlight problem can cost you couple hundred $$$ alone.

MasterCard and Amex also offer this, for VISA it's called warranty manager. Not ALL VISA's offer this, call and ask. My CitiBank does however my Bank of America/Alaska Airlines cc does not.

I got the extended warranty for my Apple laptop, and will be purchasing insurance for it when I go to college. Warranties only cover damage that you didnt cause (meaning damage that comes from factory defects, and sometimes age), and the insurance covers accidental damage, thefts, and natural disasters.

Notice the thread recently posted here about "which is easier - learning to fix PCs or learning to fix cars?"

It's obvious that everyone interpreted the question to be referring to desktop PCs. Getting to the parts that need to be adjusted/replaced on a laptop can be worse than on a car. And the laptop part prices are several times higher as well.

Also, unless your laptop never leaves your desk, it is far more likely to break than a desktop.

And if it does never leave your desk, what's the point of paying extra for the cramped awkward to use keyboard, sorry excuse for a mouse, small low-res screen, slow as molasses HD, and lack of expandability?

definitely get an extended warranty for a laptop, especially if it's your primary computer. Laptop parts are really expensive and they break easily.

1) my roommate's lcd just died on him after about a year and a half. he didn't get an extended warranty. sony wants ~$500 to fix it.

2) my other friend had an inspiron 8000 that had the usb port die. She had a 3 year warranty. Since Dell didn't seem to carry the i8000 parts anymore, she got a i8600 to replace her i8000 for free. How's THAT for an upgrade?

One year is NOT enough for a laptop. 100-200 for an extra 2-3 year warranty is more than worth the money.

if you carry it around a lot and you're planning on keeping it a while and it was $$$ to begin with, then yes. i plan on using my notebook for at least 2 years (maybe longer see how very slowly pentium-m is ramping up), and i use it hard. just about every day, it gets carried around in a backpack between a binder and textbooks, while on... and if you were to buy one today it is still about $2000 worth of notebook (which is more than i bought it for back in july :) )

not only do i have the 3 year warranty i have the 3 year complete care

CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select

Our Compaq Presario 1500T laptop purchased from Staples 9/02 is still going strong. It came with a standard 1 year manufacturer's warranty plus 1 year VISA = 2 years :)

Thanks. Anyone know if Mastercard covers this too? I'm with PCfinancial. It says I'm covered under some additional one yr warranty free, but I don't know if it applies to laptops.

First read this then call MasterCard at 1-800-MC-ASSIST give them your credit card number and ask if your credit card qualifies for extended warranty?
