Tell me where to shop for a winter jacket

I'm completely out of work to do this afternoon and have taken up the quest of finding a winter jacket.

The problem I have is that everywhere I look, the jackets either look like they are built exclusively for gay community, look like pieces of crap that will fall apart within a month, or are $800. I'm looking for a moderately priced ($100-$200) nice warm jacket without a hood that won't make me look like I desire some man loving.

So, having never bought a nice piece of winter clothing before, where is a good place to start looking?

Lol....what does a coat that "look like they are built exclusively for gay community" actually look like? 😛

I've had good experience with Columbia, North Face, and LL Bean coats/jackets. If you have a Calbelas/REI/Dick's/etc.. in your area start there.

I'll bet that was the number one answer too. I'm at WORK.

You should really try them on to make sure it isn't too big or small since every maker seems to have their own ideas about sizing.

agree on those choices. I just bought another NF jacket and it was cheaper thru their website than at Dick's (by $30).

I plan on actually going to a store. I'm just pre-shopping so I don't have to go to many stores.

I've had a Columbia jacket (titanium series) for the past 4 years and it has been great. however, NF and columbia jackets are more outdoors-y and mostly have hoods.

Oh and if you're really serious and will spend a lot of time out in the cold...Carrharts.

LOL..thats hilarious

Thats not really even a winter coat though. Fashon takes a backseat to comfort in the winter here in Chicago no matter who you are.

Yep, that jacket is definitely heterosexually-challenged...

I did just fine buying a North Face jacket at Sports Authority last winter for about $200 that was proof against -15 degree high temperatures in Milwaukee. It looks a hell of a lot more masculine than that Polo Ralph Lauren abomination...

Thars yer problem son! Menfolk don' do their shoppin' at Bloomingdales!

I bought a nice wool jacket from Macy*s for about $95. There was a 40% discount and I used a 20% coupon on top of it. Retail price of the jacket was $195.
