How on earth am I supposed to market this resume to anyone outside of IT?

Reach-arounds never hurt.

Even regular publishing houses aren't looking so good. More and more they are turning to the web, but in general, they are pretty clueless about what makes good web content.

I should state that I pretty much hate IT, and am only working this job to put the wife through school. I'd hate to be 28 with 6 years experience and try to switch industries, though.

What about technical writing? Your IT experience should open some doors in that field. Work as a technical writer for a few years, then move on to some other sort of publishing that you really want to do, whatever that is. Chances are if you work for a large company they have a doc department that perhaps you could transfer into.

Good luck. 🙂

Allow me to circrumvent you.

Technical Writer

Project Managment, a cert in this will help

if your grades were good, a nonteaching job at a University. They would eat up the English/Philosophy/SysAdmin.

Have you considered the exciting and fast paced world of prostitution?

More so, have you read in the news recently about how more women are becoming strippers because of the economy? Either of these options would work.

were you not guidance counseled or even thought of your future at some point during course selection?

I started in the Comp Sci department and hated it, so I switched to something I really enjoyed and was good at. Screw me for that, right?

Do what I did at 25, go back to school to become a pilot. With your BS you could be employable as a CFI in about 1.5 years. And be really employable 1-2 years after that and really be hoping that people are flying / shipping things again.

If you don't mind my asking, but how did you finance it? I looked into that very thing a few months back, but the costs seemed pretty prohibitive.

Pretty much. Getting into things that you really enjoy is a waste of time.

Just apply for a CEO position any where and drive the company in to the ground while taking a huge salary + bonuses.

well, I "supplemented" my BA in English with a BS in Bio/minor in Genetics, and have been working strictly in Molecular Bio research labs for the 8 years I've been out of undergrad.

I wish I had spent some more time/effort towards utilizing the English degree somewhere in publishing/writing, whatever. Somehow, I still consider science my "backup." 😕

Tech companies still need people to write manuals right.

COuld also go into graduate school for something more practical. Good way to duck out of teh job market for a while

Yes, but why do we reach around?
