Tell me everything about CA. I'm thinking of moving there permanently.

With graduation coming up on May, I plan to move on with my life and discover a totally new environment. I've never been to CA and I have great interest in getting a job there. The beautiful weathers, palm trees, sunny skies.. I love them! (The closest I experienced to that was FL)

I guess it's better I ask questions in bullets:

1. Nor cal or So cal, which is better and how are they different?
2. How are the living expenses in LA, San Jose, Sacromento, & SF compared to Boston?
3. Which city would you recommend and why?
4. I hear the weather in Nor cal is similiar to Boston, nothing spectacular... tell me more about LA.
5. Job market job market job market

If anyone would like to chat with me on AIM, please let me know. I'm excited as hell.

Don't go anywhere near LA, just trust me. I've lived all over NCal and it's all good, especially if you're a dirty hippie like me.

Four complete different people told me SoCal sucks, NorCal is where it's at... why is that?

At least in SoCal, you won't be wonder if that girl is checking you out or the girl next to you. 😀

The traffic in socal is the most horrible thing ever... I can't even stand visiting there. I am NEVER going to leave norcal ever. Perfect weather, lots of things to do, decent traffic. It's great. I live in the San Jose area. I haven't had much experience in the JOB MARKET, but I know there are lots of good businesses here.

socal traffic = God punishing everyone in socal for being evil. It's the only explanation for how there is ALWAYS traffic, at any given time on any given day. A normal 1 hour drive at 60mph will take you upwards of 3-4 hours on a really bad day. Normally will take you 2.

Can't comment on the JobMarket, but it's apparently getting better.

I've lived in both norcal and socal for about ten years each, and each has it's virtues  and it's crap. NorCal traffic sucks too, but it's nothing quite like socal.
socal cost of living tends to be slightly lower, but it varies immensely. Gas where i live costs 2.50, but if i drive 5 minutes more, it's 2.30, if i drive another 5 minutes i can probally get it for ~2.20.

The Weather is fantastic 🙂 I prefer norcal weather cause i like my weather slightly cooler, but *shrugs* to each his own.

You need to specifically research an area in norcal or socal, cause the cost of living, commute, etc will vary greatly.

It's such a big state from N to S that it's hard to make sweeping generalizations. Check into almanac type info on all the areas you're thinking of. Check state and local laws for anything that might affect you. (http://norml.com/) Check job listings and housing prices from the local papers online.

Nice job of linking.

There is that cost of living ap on MSN that is really cool.
I'll see if I saved the link and post it.
First off, if you take your car,m don't hesitate to get it registered. There is a bounty program for out of state plates exceeding the time limit to register and some people really like turning people in.
LA is wayyyyyy big.
SJ and SF have very temperate climates relativly speaking,
Sac has a bit of a chill during the mid winter and the fog during late winter early spring can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder. Summers can be Very hot for a few weeks. 2+ weeks over 100 degrees is not uncommon.
I really liked the SF Bay Area.
Lived on the Bay for 7 years in Emeryville. COL is very expensive. Compares to NYC. Of course Boston is no bargain with parking costing an arm and a leg.

1. Socal. Socal has the theme parks, malls, clubs, and city life that norcal lacks. It also supposedly has the perfect weather. If you live in the valleys, snowboarding and surfboarding are usually no more than an hours drive.
2. LA = SUPEROVERINFLATED. And it's going up. San Jose is even more expensive. Don't know anything about Sac. Average price of a house (2br) should run you $300,000+. Renting would cost you $1000+
3. Neither.
5. Good luck, everyone is moving out. However, the medical field here pays fairly well with R.N.s making $50k starting pay due to the nationwide nursing shortage.

It's the best, go to NorCal..lol. They have a hot football team at Cal here..you don't wanna miss it before Cal starts suckin again...lol

But I gotta agree, SoCal is marginally better..

1. Nor cal or So cal, which is better and how are they different?

they are worlds apart. life in norcal to me has always been slower, while in socal it is a complete rush everywhere i go. i've lived in norcal all of my life and been in socal since i went to college (and wound up staying.)

i found the bay area to have a lot more hippies in general, and LA county is also swarming with them. but each place you can find the other side.
2. How are the living expenses in LA, San Jose, Sacromento, & SF compared to Boston?

find that cost of living calculator. SF is higher than all three of those cities. sacramento would be the lowest. i'd live in San jose, but i'm biased because i grew up there.
3. Which city would you recommend and why?

SAN JOSE! or the entire south bay area. life is more normal in norcal to me. socal, i'd live in orange county or the valley... or in burbank. COL might be a tad higher in san jose, but i like life better up there. you need to find the right neighborhoods though.
4. I hear the weather in Nor cal is similiar to Boston, nothing spectacular... tell me more about LA.

Los Angeles is fairly temperate most of the year. it doesn't get overly cold, it doesn't get really hot. when it gets really hot, it only lasts for a few days. it is rarely humid. most days i'm cruising about in just a tshirt and jeans. in the winter i actually wear long sleeved clothing and coats, since it has been freakishly cold lately (highs in the low 60's, lows in the 40's. BRR)
5. Job market job market job market

i don't know. it seems to be picking up slightly but it's going to depend on what industry you want to go into.

1. depending on your field of work. As an example, if you are a special effect engineer, Burbank, near LA is the choice.
2. If you include food, SF is probably as expensive as Boston. Followed by San Jose, LA and Sacramento.
3. Again, depending on your field. San Diego has the nicest weather overall. If you work in LA, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, Walnut are nice towns to live.
4. Who BS you that the weather in Nor cal is similiar to Boston? That person must has frostbite in his/her posterior. LA West side is not so bad, Westwood is fun but you don't want to live in LA period due to its tax base. Nobody mentions about Orange County. Check it out (Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, Irvine ...)

5. Again you need to tell us your prefered line of work so we can advise.

Aren't there any suburbs in SoCal where the people are more spread out and traffic isn't so bad?

All I keep hearing about SoCal is the traffic.

What are you talking about? Sacramento is nowhere near San Jose and the others.

Diamond bar is like in the middle of the traffic nightmares during rush hour. It is a nice town though.

I would say go to San Diego for the best. You got Mexico for all your illegal needs, better beaches and warmer weather (I hear you crazy people like that because I love the seattle/cold/dreary/wherever weather). If you want a nice community and less of a big town field, I'd say mid Cali around Monterey is really nice.

Otherwise, I'd stay away from Sac as people are moving here and the town just isn't ready to deal with all the people.

San Diego rocks...although my favorite city in CA would be Pasadena. IMO, it's one of the classiest cities in California, if not the U.S.

All I keep hearing about SoCal is the traffic.

LA is one huge suburb. The suburban area is the size of some New England states. You can drive 3 hours north/south or 2 hours east/west (no traffic) and still be in "LA".

Yep... SJ is pretty sweet. I live in Campbell. Weather's hella nice. I used to live in Chicago and the winters and summers are killer. I guess the weather is the best part. It only rains in the winter, and the summers are crisp, not humid like the East/ Midwest.
