Namely the 2nd gen GSX. How reliable, and how comfy it is for a 6 foot-ish guy. Want a decent, kind of budget japanese car that can hang with the v8 ponies. I think only the GSX fits the bill.

Decent in quality and durability.

Gonna be kind of cramped for you. I am 5'10 and it is a tight fit for me.

urgh, suck. I was afraid of that, but seems like every japanese coupe I've sat in I've had that problem. Dammit, big coupes are expensive though.

I have a GS and I'm 6' tall. I fit in there, it's not super comfortable, but it's not bad. I do find my legs rub against the steering wheel constantly, due to the layout.

The Mitsubishi 3000GT hangs with the ponies... it's basically the eclipse's big brother ;)
I got my 95 base 3000GT right before Christmas for about $14,000 with 46K miles. The VR4 version has all wheel drive, all wheel steering, and 100hp more to power the extra wheels I believe.

Geez SVT, I don't get the chance to explain myself? :p

yeah I know bone stock it's not up there, but I hear for turbo cars you can drop in a new ECU that ups the boost and you get ~10% more hp. Plus a couple more bolt ons and it would be good to go.

How much do old VR4s run?

VR4 = One of the Quickest cars money can buy ;)
For the VR4 you can get them for about $10,000 --> $45,000 they were made from 1991 until 1999. $45K is for the convertible version... you most likely wont find a 99 model because I think there are only 72 in the USA assuming no more have been wrecked. If you'd like to read up on the cars or ask any questions about them or their sister car the Dodge Stealth (can prolly get these cheaper) go to the 3si forums
BTW No I don't work @ 3si and aren't registered on the forums.. I just read em ;) DO own a 3000GT tho and love it so far :)

With the VR4s can you also drop in a new ECU to get more power?

The VR4 might hang with the ponies. The SL or regular 3000GT does not. I have raced many of them.

Grand Prix GTP is nice.
My best friends father is abour 6' 4" and he slides in nicely.
But it IS american.

Not only the VR4 can hang with the ponies. With the right upgrades, u can eat them alive. Its all in the TURBO baby!!! ECU upgrade, send it to G-Force in california and that probably give u good 5 - 10% more horses.

they phased the 3000GT out like in 1999 and now the Eclipse is what they're pushing. But I think the Eclipses (aside from a gay name) are crap compared to the 3000GT's.

I have a gsx, Personally I love it, and I can deal with the cramped cockpit. You really appreciate the all wheel drive in the winter. All wheel drive feels much different in that if you ever do get the car to actually slide, the whole car slides as one without any spin. Another bonus is that it corners like a porcshe. If you are tall though, Id still recommend a Grand Prix GTP. Its got decent power and its 100x roomier.

the Toyota Supra or the 3000GT VR4, that is if you really want to hang w/ Camero or Mustangs V8s

the Eclipse Turbo is ehh.. not that great of a car, the don't handle all that well, and they break down quite frequently. Plus, w/ Turbo, good luck man, you're not gonna last very long (the engine that is)

if I were you, I would go w/ a 94-95 Intergra GSR, those are the quickest year, and my friends's stock 95 GSR beats out even 98-99 TYPE-R man! Or Prelude for that matter.

but if you REALLY do want to hang w/ V8s, go w/ the 3000GT or the Supra

Japanese cars that can hang with the V8's:
Nissan 300ZX (Turbo)
Toyota Supra (Turbo)
Mazda RX-7 (Turbo)

Or if you'd like, get an Integra and install a turbo kit - those cars can really scream with only 9lbs of boost.

There was no '99 Type-R.

There's a Dodge Stealth, I swear its the same as a 3000GT (right?!) around where I am for under $5k, but it's not a VR4. RX-7 Twin Turbos are real sweet, as are Supras. :)

illkid, to the best of my knowledge, a Stealth R/T is the same as the VR4 of the similar year. And the base Stealth is built off of the same frame as the 3000GT (the bodies are almost exactly the same as well). The R/T includes the 4WD and 4WS that the VR4 includes...

Actually, yeah I'm starting to realize that budget, fast, japanese and comfortable for me aren't going to go together. Gotta drop at least one :(

<< The VR4 might hang with the ponies. The SL or regular 3000GT does not. I have raced many of them. >>

Yeah only the turbo ones are up there. If I was going to get a 3000GT, it'd have to be turbo. I'm not terribly fond of cars that look fast but can't hang.

<< Grand Prix GTP is nice. But it IS american. >>

Well, nothing against american cars really. It's just not my style. How fast are the grand prix? Actually, if I was going american, I'd probably just look for a 92 Z28 or something. But camaros are freaking huge ass cop magnets though. I remember this one time I was racing a current gen v6 camaro on the freeway in my accord. We were both doing 100+ but the cop decided to pull the camaro over. I got away.

<< if I were you, I would go w/ a 94-95 Intergra GSR, those are the quickest year, and my friends's stock 95 GSR beats out even 98-99 TYPE-R man! Or Prelude for that matter. >>

I've been in both the prelude and an integra and they are both too small for me. And the thing with the integra is that it doesn't really have that much torque. A while back, my friend got a new 98 GS-R. Nice car, but it's kind of buzzy and they really slow down when you stuff 3 full size guys in there. Plus getting either of those cars would place me comfortably in the riceboy category which I'd prefer not to do.

I have complicated tastes. :p I guess I'll look into that dodge stealth thing.
