Tell me about Canadian television.

If you live in Canada on the US border can you get US tv stations ota? Or do you use a different tv format?
Do they have cable tv in Canada? Do they show US programs?

Are there commercials on Canadian tv?

Same technical system as the US. You can receive their stations, they can receive ours. One private network, CTV and the Crown Corporation network CBC. They have lots of local content regulations which limits how much American TV can be broadcast over those networks but cable (at least the last time I was there which was years ago) carries US stations in addition to Canadian stations however they are forced to sometimes blackout programming due to the local carry regulations.

So, they would get like the entire US primetime lineup of the broadcast networks, including things like American Football and Baseball?

All I think of when I think Canadian TV.

We have 2 other private networks: CityTv and Global. Otherwise, Linflas is correct.

We get some of the US baseball and football games, but generally, you have to have extended cable to get local US channels. Also, I don't think we can get things like HBO (instead we get some of the programs on HBO Canada), but we do have our own premium channels like Showcase.

It's all the same shows, but everything is dubbed over in Canadian. It's pretty funny to hear all the actors sound polite when they appear to almost be yelling at each other in the video.

For instance:
Jack Bauer (American): "WHERE'S THE BOMB???"
Jocque Bauer (Canadian): "would you happen to know where the bomb is, eh?"

Showcase is a spinoff of Showtime <-- american

If you have full cable you can generally watch anything available in the US plus some Canadian content the US doesn't have.

You will not usually see American commercials though, so us Canadians never see Superbowl commercials.

they have quotas for protecting their national identity or some silliness.
so their version of the daily show aka rick mercer is horribly bad.
and its very pc, so you got little mosque on the prairie.
any folks who have talent apparently are able to jump the border and not have to deal with canadian tv for long.

More naked people on Canadian telelvision.
No 5 second, or whatever, delays, unless it's a US Feed.
More crappy Canadian programming.

So everyone in the US is missing out on Kenny vs Spenny?

Not sure about that one, but I can say for sure that Pure Pwnage, Billable Hours, and Rent-a-Goalie, for example, are only broadcast in Canada.

Edit: It's on Comedy Central in the US.

Apparently Trailer Park Boys only made it to the US last year.

Is the CBC like the BBC in that boobies are fine. When I was in London, my flatmates and I watched "Showgirls" on BBC and it was totally unedited. Does this sort of thing happen in Canuckistan?

Canadian TV is vary similar to US TV. We use the same ATSC/NTSC broadcast format. However, Canadian TV broadcasts in 1080i where as a lot of US networks broadcast at 720p.

We have four networks. Global, CITY, CTV, and CBC. CBC is a for profit public television station which airs commercials. It's owned by the government. The rest of the networks are privately owned. There are a few non profit, commercial free public TV stations such as TVO.

Canada has many different cable companies. Shaw, Rogers, and Cogeco are the big ones. There are two satellite companies: ShawDirect and Bell TV. Both broadcast 100% digital TV. Canadian TV shows mostly US programs but is mandated to have a certain percentage of Canadian content. Usually around 25% I think. Varies. All satellite and cable companies provide the five main US networks and a few specialty channels such as KTLA and TBS. For movies, there's an HBO counterpart called The Movie Network. Has five stations showing various genres, all in HD.

Most networks are all in HD now. CITY and CTV are the current leaders with the most HD programming.

Most of the PC shows that 0roo0roo is talking about are on the government owned CBC. CTV airs Canadian shows like Flashpoint, a cop drama, which was actually picked up by CBS. I'm a fan of Murdoch Mysteries on CITY, which is a bit like CSI in the 1890s. Canadian versions of American shows such as Canadian Idol are hugely popular. George Strombo on CBC is the Canadian version of Leno/Letterman/Coco. Great show though a little to liberal for my liking. I've met Strombo. He's intense but a nice guy.

If you live near the border, you can put up an antenna and get both Canadian and US OTA tv. Same standards etc.

Yes we get all the regular US networks, and generally they show US commercials, but the Canadian carrier has the right to pre-empt commercials if they want. What this means is during a re-run of the Simpsons, we'll see commercials for Jack-In-The-Box and Target, but during the Superbowl we'll get the same stupid Canadian Tire ad 20 times during the game.
