Tell me about 7.1 home theater surround.

I've been wanting to upgrade my home theater sound for a while now, and while I'd have to buy it in pieces, I obviously want to start with the receiver. I've been using an RCA HTIB for about 4 years, and it's done the job quite well. However, I'm looking to step to the next level.

I've been looking heavily at the Pioneer VSX-1015TX, and think I'll pull the trigger on it. End users absolutely love this receiver since it was released a year ago, and a huge thread over at avsforum.com proves it. Plus, the price is exactly what I'm willing to pay for a mid-range setup. Speakers will come later.

However, I've never delved into the world of 7.1 surround, and while I understand the setup of speakers, I don't know about capability with equipment. Are some current DVD's set up for a full 7.1? Is 7.1 reserved for specific formats at the moment? What exactly do I need to take advantage of 7.1 in the future (besides the receiver and 7 speakers + 1 sub)?

Thanks for any info to clear this up.

Get a PT job at your local retail store and get 60-70% off. Kick ass system for the price of your mid range system FTW. Working 2 jobs FTL.

For me, 5.1 is enough. I've tried 7.1 and it does add a bit of sound in new directions, but I'd rather spend the money spent on an extra pair of speakers and wire and spend it on better speakers in a 5.1 set.

Also, oddly my receiver overloads on a pretty low volume with 7.1, but works fine with 5.1...

Discounts @ places like Circuit City and Best Buy are great. I worked and Best Buy in HS and speakers and recievers and stuff were always AT LEAST 50% off.

If you are buying a Pioneer receiver, I would look at the Elite line with at least HDMI capability....thats where it is going

As previously stated, 7.1 is pretty much overkill. I have 6.1 and I've only noticed specific audio coming from the rear speaker on one movie (LoTR). 5.1 is adequate for 99% of the home theaters out there....save your money and get better speakers instead of more.

Amazingly, there's already an HDMI replacement in the works. The industry needs to get its sh!t together.

I think thats more for in the computer market than HT. I assume you're talking about DisplayPort (I think thats what its called) that a bunch of big computer companies started backing.
