TELEZAPPER II $2.90 plus shipping at outpost.com

http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3316912

The Telezapper plugs into any phone or phone jack to dramatically reduce annoying computer generated telemarketing calls Automatically blocks calls transmitted by computers by sending them a message that your phone has been disconnected Hooks up to your phone line in less than one minute This system will not interfere with normal calls, answering machines, voicemail, caller ID, or call waiting Just one Telezapper covers all phones and answering machines connected to that line No monthly fees or charges apply to use of this machine.

Anyone know if this thing really works?

Still get a marketing call once in a long while, but the majority of them have stopped after signing up with the Do Not Call registry.

Alternate solution:

Not answering the phone, ever = free
Your savings : $2.90 + shipping (and tax, where applicable)

Funny, I got 10X more marketing calls since I signed up for the do not call list.

Damn that sucks...I've only gotten a few "survey" calls since I put myself on the Do Not call list.

If I can do that *and* get DSL at the same time... then that'd be great.

Umm... As I recall this works by sending a special tone every time you pick up the phone. Seems pretty freakin annoying to me.

The special tone? It's the first "doo" of the phone company's "doo Doo DOO we're sorry, the number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service..." message.

The theory is that the telemarketers' robot dialers, in an effort to be efficient, will instantly hang up on any disconnected numbers and no longer call them. However, the practice is that every single time somebody calls you, and you pick up the phone, it instantly beeps at both you and the caller.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The free alternative, btw, is to find out the frequency of that tone (it's an easy find on the internet) and/or just download the .wav or .mp3 of it, and record that into the beginning of your answering machine message. Again, if you let your machine pick up, it'll automatically screen phone robots. (and isn't quite as invasive on your conversation/picking up the phone)

And I remember these things were $40 a year ago. Shows how much the do not call list can do.
