I don't pay bellsouth $23 a month so someone can waste my time pitching me..

Good idea. How much do those air horns run?

A referees whistle is cheaper and won't run outta air untill you do.

I don't know if this would still work anymore, due to the lack of modems in use now...
Have your normal phone line hooked into the modem on your computer.
Telemarketer calls.
Keep them on the line long enough to get to your computer and bring up a terminal program (Hyperterminal).
Type in the command, ATA this will pick up the line on the modem and attempt to connect, giving the rat bastard on the other end an ear full of loud modem noises.
They usually hang up before you can.

I kept getting missed calls from a wierd number on the celly. Finally answered it and it was one of those automated messages about being pre-approved for a home loan. I thought it was wierd and then my GF started to get calls from the same number.

I used to get dozens of calls on my cell phone because a retarded local real estate agent had my mobile number listed on a website as his. It FINALLY got corrected after a couple of years, but I am worried. I got a call yesterday in regards to some apartment, so I am wondering if he fscked up and listed my number again somewhere.

Just report them all to the Fed Gov. Let them be the oens to say if they are exempt or not. AFAIK the only exempt people are charities and political parties. Anything else is not allowed to call unless you are already a customer of theirs.

Do Not Call list is still valid, but you need to renew it every 5 years. Good luck remembering to do that.

My folks are getting a slight increase in pre-recorded phone calls. Those are illegal unless certain things are done (must state company name and number) and the ones my folk's get never state a company name and number. It's always "Hi, this is an important messege, please call us back at [number]."

I told them they can sue the companies doing that in small claims court for $500. They're both retired so they actually have the free time to do it, but I don't think they've went through the motions yet (it's fairly elaborate).

CALLER ID FTW

Only pick up numbers you recognize

QFT.

MotionMan

I'm a student and that costs extra.

What does it cost a month for you: About a six-pack's worth? It is worth it.

MotionMan

Except caller ID is worthless for screening anymore. 90% of the crap calls come up "unknown number", "restricted", or "800 service". The problem with avoiding those calls is that sometimes legit businesses that I deal with come up with the exact same things.

No legit business blocks CallerID. In any event, that is illegal in my state, so if they pull that crap on me, I will report them. However, I have NEVER had that happen to me. EVERY SINGLE one of the telemarketing calls I have received in the last, oh, 3 years, Caller ID showed their name or number.

If your state does not have or enforce such a law, move. ;)

MotionMan

Every call I get from verizon has blocked caller ID.

I would do the same. Who in thier right mind would listen to unsolicited pitches for donations. Even it was for midget aids infested crack babies... probably some guy with a war dialer trying to scam people.

I have had the occasional call and told the people to email or mail info... they usually say they will... but I have never ask for my address and hang up.
